Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

One of my roomates just bought a Mig 180 from Clarke and we're just ------- around on scrap metal. It came with .032 wire or whatever the bigger ---- is, and it is hard to not burn through.

you guys have any advice for figuring this ---- out, and learning how to lay a descent bead? I'm gonna go pick up some .023 wire on friday and hopefully put my exhaust together with it this weekend. Any help would be appreciated...

turn down the heat

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

it's at the lowest setting, and the wire feed is at it's slowest ???

Just burns when I try to fill the seam between piping

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

I've welded at an angle rather than straight at it and it helped some.

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

I'm already doing that... hopefully the smaller wire will make this easier...

oh really, I don't remember what I do then. It's been a while, but every hole I made I was able to fix no problem. Mostly because I wasn't testing, rather just welding on the final product.

get the gas :)

I've got argon/CO2 75/25 mix hooked up already...

maybe slow down the feed of the wire?

well ----, umm i find mig welding to be harder then zrc, but i would just keep practising.

sorry I'm tired and just throwing out suggestions.

try speeding it up, sometimes the slowest setting isn't the prime. I find that when I was welding the pipes, I had it around the mid-range setting. I didn't like the slowest, wasn't very good in my situation.

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

---- comes out quick at just above the slowest setting, I think I just suck at this and need to keep trying...

turn the heat up all the way, turn the wire up pretty high and thenstart a pool, you'll burn through so work fast, keep it moving, so finish your bead up and then stop and turn the heat down all the way and go back and fill in your holes. adjust wire speed to your like-ing it. 8)

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

you need to turn up your wire feed speed. the more filler you add when you weld, the colder it will get and shouldn't put a hole through it. the same theory applies to tig welding. if you want a bead that looks kinda like a worm, you just lower your amp setting and speed up the amount of filler rod you add. also, try moving a bit slower so the filler piles up ontop of itself a little.

good luck.

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

Im seriously interested in getting a welder this weekend

MIG, is the point n shoot type style right? Dont have to feed in wire with your free hand?

Im just going to want an electric one though since Ill just be doing exhaust and manifolds and charge pipes and ----

hmmmmmm

Is gas stronger or something? I think electric would be good for me eh?

Is there any specs a welder should have for doing little ---- like this?

Thanks

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

I'd eventually like to get one as well but I don't have access to the huge plug in (220 isn't it? I'm not sure). All I've got is the standard 110, but getting gas wouldn't be a problem since we have a local welding shop.

Would a welder running off 110 be enough to do charge pipes, downpipe, manifold, etc?

yea it would be enough.

if you're just learning to weld and want to ---- around, get some thick ass scrap metal... like 1/4" atleast and then turn the ------- heat up and wire speed. You'll get the hang of it.

---- trying to leanr on thin metal...

thin metal is harder to weld.....

make that ---- boil...that's the only way to do it...

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

I've practicing on scrap rotors I grabbed in the trash at a local dealership, those aren't to hard, but when I do exhaust pipe, I can tack it fine, and then it doesn't work to weld the seam.

With the higher wire speeds, it seems to heat up the metal, and then just push the wire through...

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

If you turn up the gas pressure, it will cool down your weld faster.

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

ya thats what i was gonna say turn up the speed of the wire, the more wire you lay down the less time it has to burn through.

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

you need to get smaller guage wire try .23 for welding pipes and stuff .32 is for 1/8 inch and over.

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

Im just using straight c02 on my Miller.I get a little bit of spalter but nothing worth worrying about.c02 voids the warrenty on the regulators though couse it tends to freeze them.

As far as the heat and feed setting go,youll get the hang of it.It doesnt take long.Just keep practicing.

Re:Mig welding, got one, trying to figure this out.

I figured it out!!

My roomate had just put in the wire that came with it... I found out today when replacing it, that the wire was flux core.

I bought 22 lbs. of wire today, and within about 15 minutes of playing with the settings, I could lay a nice bead and even fill the gap between a 2 and 2.5 inch pipe, Not recommended, but I could layer it and it worked pretty well.

Anyway, I just welded up a new exhaust for my car, it's cool to be able to create ----...

I 2nd that. I had the same problem when i started, you spend to much tim ein one spot waiting for the wire to feed.
I think you just need to keep practicing. mess with the speed until you find a good medium.

good luck holmes
