Shoulda stayed in? Ya right. I put in my 5 years. I am making well beyond what the military was paying me, and living a much better life. I am glad I went in, it gave me the opportunity to be where I am now. But I don't ever want to go back in. I wasn't what the Marine Corps would call your ideal SGT. I didn't get off yelling at people, my best friends were E2-E4, and I stood up for everyone under me when some dumbass motard would give em hell. I only have 11 months left in the IRR, and my job was none of those listed, and it was an overful/dying MOS. So I should be safe, but I'm worried about my cousin who is pretty upset about it right now.

And my MOS was 5953 Air Traffic Control Radar Technician. Sgt. Halonen, look me up!!!

BTW, spent my last year on MCAS Futenma ;) June 2004 - May 2005

sweet. thats where im working now. And im the exact same way you were. I am very difficult to piss off and use to run my shop very smoothly and no one touched us. I am now filling a billet, so Im not in a shop anymore. ohh well. ^-^

But yeah, the recall sucks. I don't understand how they litterly pay people (non-Marine Corps) to get out, yet they pull other people back in. What MOS's are on the list, I havent seen any. I would imagine 03's, 02's, and maybe 06's. (im an 0621 by MOS)

Re: Marine Recall

They mentioned something about needing MP's, Communication, Grunts, Intel, and I think 1 or 2 more. Where do you work at on Futenma? I used to work in the GEMD shop, right by the control tower. You happen to know anyone that works in ATC or GEMD(atc maintenance)? SSgt. Guy (soon to be Gy Guy, kinda cute for a ssgt!)? She was my old boss. Or Capt. Owens, another one of my old bosses.

in the story they said they're not calling back first and last year IRR's ;) ;)

Re: Marine Recall

The marine IRR recall is what is being made public. I've got a buddy in Army IRR (1.5 years left) and the recruiters were at his house the other day pretty much telling him "pack your ---- and be ready."

I only know of one person who works ATC, and he works on Kadena. Capt Owens though...that rings a bell for some reason. Ive seen that name somewhere...
I work at the group building back by the Armory. I don't work the flightline.

So I was right then. 06-Comm, 03- Grunts, 02, intel.....I didnt guess MP's though. Speaking of MP's, theres a gate guard on Kadena...a japaneese guard, shes SMOKIN!

I would be pissed had I gotten out and forced to come back in, but I think its kinda funny....almost all of my Marines in my old shop WANTED to go to Iraq. 95% begged me to go. "If you hear of anything, put me on the list"......and yet they report on the news "due to people not vol. to go, they have to do a recall"...thats horse ----. Marines dont join the Marine Corps to sit on their ass. 95% of Marines beg to deploy. You know that as well as I do.

Re: Marine Recall

I think that's a bunch of horse ----. My buddy was trying to enlist as a grunt (03 Infantry) and they wouldn't let him do it. The liaison at the MEPS told him that the program code UH has no openings for our state at this point in time and they'll have to look on the national level after he enlists open contract.

They told me the same ----, and they didn't want to give me a 06 Communications MOS. I was open contract until 2-3 weeks before I left for boot camp because they said there were no jobs available that I would want. Finally I got a 06 MOS, but they said they had to work hard to get it. What's even worse is that they ELS'd me out of boot camp after a week of being there because they found some ---- in my medical records that I didn't tell them about.

I think the recruiters and liaisons in my region must just suck and not know what the ---- is going on in the world or something. :7

That is what I was thinking.

Harder and longer training
no signing bonus
have to purchase some equipment yourself

There is a laundry list of reasons to not go to the Marines. If you are there...It is because you wanted to be.

I for some reason find this hard to believe
They wouldnt get the recruiters to go to your house, they send you a letter in the mail and call you.

Re: Marine Recall

I'm useless to the military after I've been out for over 6 months because all of my qualifications go away and it takes 2 years to requalify. I'm a nuke so I'm only trained to operate reactors. I don't do any gun quals or anything outside of my rate. We don't get sent TAD and the only shore billets we can get are to teach other nukes, be a nuke recruiter, or be a radcon worker... we pretty much do our own thing...

Yep, wether it's 4years active and 4years inactive reserve or it's 6years active and 2years inactive reserve. It's for a total of 8 years.

I met a Navy Nuke once. It was funny, because we both applied for the same nuclear job in the civilian world, and they hired me over him, and I didn't know jack ---- about nuclear energy! jarhead > sailor :6. Seems a lot of nuke guys think they are some sorta pedistal and everyone else isn't ----.

We just know better than to work in the nuclear field. Only the shitbags and idiots that couldn't reenlist and didn't want to learn anything new try to go to a plant.

Re: Marine Recall

Well, I don't work at a single plant for one, I work at tons of plants all over the world. I'd never want to work at one specific plant, and be one of those lazy ass union workers. I work for Westinghouse, building new refueling machines for new plants, or old plants that want to upgrade to some better equipment, so we travel al over the world. And I was in the military, so I'm all about traveling. But in the civilian world, travel = money! And getting paid extra, to travel to Spain or England, well I'm all about that.

And if the ones that got out and are working in this field as a civilian are idiots, then I would walk around proudly with that shitbag/idiot title. The nuclear field is brutal if you don't have what it takes to make it in it. But if you do, the pay is ------- unbelievable. I made more in this job in 3 months then I made in the military in 8 months. And I don't have to get my haircut every week, or live in some shitty barracks, or listen to fuckers bitch at me beacuse they are a rank above me. If that makes me a shitbag, then so be it, because I'll take this life over the military life anyday. I don't regret going in the military, because it made it possible for me to have this job, and I'm thankful for that. But I would never go back in now, I'm too happy with this. The marines is a closed chapter in my book, and I'm doing bigger/better things now.
