each time zone was done at the same "time" for example, each time zone was done at its "midnight", so the photos were taken over a 2day period (considering that it really takes 2 days for 1 day to pass) and then compiled together.
it would not make much sense to take a picture of the west cost while the sun is still out, that would ruin the whole thing

There is only a 3 hour difference. 10 PM in the East, 7 PM in California. Not a 6 hour difference.
