Re:map of the world at night

What do the colors signify i see its all heavily poulated areas but i dont think thats it :-\

Re:map of the world at night

its the heavily populated areas, but the $$$$$ also play a factor, cuz most of the heavy populations areas are too poor to have alot of things that give off light.

for example, look at hati and cuba, compared to jamaica (me ;D )and pueto rico, the poorer countries have less light.

also look at america, europe and japan, compared to the rest of the world.

Re:map of the world at night

onlyhalf of the world is in "night time" at once. if this is a composite map it totally isn't reliable because of the variation in time each bit of surface are was recorded. that and the angle at which the heat/light is being recorded from would completely throw off readings. unless the some sort of sattelite that ran half the circumfrence of the earth and orbited at a speed which would allow it to be at everywhere in the world at the exact same time (on the clock not in general, which BTW you couldn't anyway unless timezones were continuously variable) this is complete bullshit.

that being said, it's pretty cool to look at huh? can you imagine what the stars would look like from, say, mongolia? or somewhere real deep in africa? that'd be amazing.

Re:map of the world at night

well there's a reason the west coast is darker then the east coast...time zones anyone? ::)

it's 10pm on the east, its like what, 4-5pm on the west? who needs lights then?

Paperchase013 08-02-2004 08:59 PM

Re:map of the world at night

each time zone was done at the same "time" for example, each time zone was done at its "midnight", so the photos were taken over a 2day period (considering that it really takes 2 days for 1 day to pass) and then compiled together.

it would not make much sense to take a picture of the west cost while the sun is still out, that would ruin the whole thing

Not exactly ;) There is only a 3 hour difference. 10 PM in the East, 7 PM in California. Not a 6 hour difference. :)
