Lost my job Monday!..suggestions

After almost two years selling cars at a Honda dealership...they canned me! :-[ I'd had a couple slow months (along with everyone else) and they replaced me. That's the car business for ya.

I've been considering either opening my own business (which will be tough, considering I've been down on income lately), or working for one of the generic parts companies. They're opening a new O'Reilly's like 3 blocks from my house. Does anybody know what kind of money you can make at a place like this as say Store mgr or Asst mgr?

I really want to do something related to cars because that's what I know. Any suggestions for my next career?

Ben

ps- I've already ruled out: hooking (no one could afford me), internet pornstar (what would my family think), pro athlete (bum knee, lazy), and swimsuit/underwear model (i hate the way a thong feels). 8)

consider going to a tech school

-- or if you want to become a manager, and be related to the automobile field...how about parts manager? they make good money.

opening your own business is hard and you prob wont start were you want to be at until a few years after. If you want to deal with cars and have any knowledge of working on them you could open your own shop maybe? Store manager or Assistant manager doesn't sound bad. You could do that to help you start you own business on the side.

i am workign in a "generic parts companies"
typical warehouse guy. about $1300 a month.
if you are going into management. ur looking at about 2 grand at most when the company first started.
and trust me it take a LONGGGGGGGG time for a company like that to build up.
i`d rather start it on my own(i am actually planning to). but make sure u got a lot of hookups before anything

ejewkayshun..i don't got know edgoocayshun..just went to college for a while in the Pre-engineering program, then i quit.

I thought about working somewhere and running my business on the side (kinda what i've always done). Yes, it is a performance oriented endeavor. I've already got dealerships with Eagle specialties, NX, Matrix, GEM, and have access to dealer pricing through NOPI and Discount Tire.

I used to do Mobile Electronics, and was a performance parts manager for the audio shop. I have plenty of mechanical ability, tools, and desire...just no $ or a place big enough to actually call a shop.

Don't really think i want to stay in the car business, it's really in a down spot right now, plus winter's coming on...i started in the winter once, and it sucked!

Tech school sounds great, but i can't do that. None very close to my area (commutable distance). Need to make the payments you know (car, house, ccard, insurance, etc..). plus, i'm getting married next Nov. and i've got a honeymoon to pay for.

i'm taking this week off, to get my head straight and weigh my options. checked out the paper earlier and found a job opening at a local engine builder, they deal in small displacement engines (motorcycle) for micro sprints and such..they're supposed to be the guys to beat, but i don't follow that type of stuff. (i wonder what they could do with a 1600cc Honda motor?) check out their site, what do you guys think?

thanks for the ideas and replies.

Ben

For the first 5 years or so after my parents opened their restuarant all the money they made went right back into the business. The money comes in after you have finished paying off all of your equipment, etc, but you will be poor at first. I am not saying this to discourage you, b/c now my parents are a lot financially safer than they were working for the man, but I think it is something you need to be prepared for.

They look cool, some badass machines... but if you know nothing about the sport, then getting a position with them may be difficult.

yeah, i realize that. if i was doing something i liked, my own performance shop, it wouldn't matter if i made big money right away, enough to pay my bills would be sufficient. I've been researching the idea of my own business for some time now. I just need something (i don't know what) to convince me one way or the other.

kinda what i thought, i know 2 guys that work there (not very well tho). one of them is trying to build a crx drag car. i'm sure that i could learn their businees very quickly, but it might not pay that well starting out. i'm going by there today and talk to them.

Re:Lost my job Monday!..suggestions

I suggest getting a job asap. That will pay the bills to start off. Then apply for a small business loan through the govt'. Then when you are ready to get that going you can quit your day job or reduce the hours, that way you never have any down time where you are making $0.00 You should also know that youmight not even make the money for bills with your own business. Try to do one thing to start with, like tint, engine work, body work ect. Going into parts is hard because a lot of places won't give you a good deal when you just open up.

I know a guy who started doing whatever he could out of a one car garage during the day, then working at a restauraunt at night. He says it was tough but after a few years, his buisness is supporting him pretty well. I say hold off on that, and try for that machinists job. I guarantee that if those guys do good work, that experience will be very valuable to you later on when you do start your own buisness.

i don't even pretend to think that starting/owning my own business will/is easy. I know that if i decide to do it that i will have to work more hours than i ever have for less pay, if any.

ive actually thought about getting a few friends together... renting a small warehouse, and do engine swaps, and turbo's, and what have you....

its risky and ----... but at least you would be doing something you like... and you get to hang out with your buddies all day... hell you can even drink beer and watch porn if you feel like it...
