i hear even though they have no contact it continues to carry out it programmed mission of drilling and photographing.

If you had 70 billion why would you bother with a stuipd d series :p

Not surprised. Is it supposed to rendezvous back anywhere, or will it just keep roaming the planet until it runs outta batteries? lol

d series for life.

ppst solar powered ;) they estimate 90 days uuntil the mars dust covers the panels too much to let sunlight power it.

2nd rover called Opportunity lands saturday

When are we gonna lern we're not smart enough to figure out how to keep in contact with something bagillions of miles away. Something always goes wrong. Do these things ever get recovered contact has been lost with them?

would have been cheaper to build a stargate

Re:Lost contact with mars rover *DOH*

It's funny because people think the guys building these things are almost like gods. Obvisouly not as NASA screws up things left and right add another one to the list. I personally thinks it's a waste and we need to focus our attentions on other things in this nation like education and health care but spending billions showing how weak minded humans really are is well worth it.

Heres a novel idea, (inagreeance with Chris) focus on the ------- planet we live on. Work on making this one a better place, rather than trying to make a new one capable of housing humans.

Re:Lost contact with mars rover *DOH*

i mean, even sucessfuly landing it on mars and having any contact with it is a big accomplishment, and deserves props, but yeah, it's worthless, i don't know about you, but i'm not moving to mars :-\ so yeah, the money definitely could/can be better spent on starving children that would faint if they ever saw 100 dollars, but they're throwing away billions. oh well, i usually ignore politics completely because it's all a joke :P

lol credit is given where it is due. I know I woudln't be able to make one of those things. However, I know we don't need it too. So stop wasting our money fuckers!!

if they were going to through all that money away they should have just gave it to us.

haha good point, you should write them and tell em to stop ------ around and just give the $$$ to us so we can continue to enjoy our cars, especially those of yours that thrive off this glorious oxygen.

With out the advances the space program has made we wouldnt be half the civilization we are today. But then again your from oregon the state that Nader almost won. =o)

Re:Lost contact with mars rover *DOH*

That is true, but there is a lot we don't need. We don't need to know about Mars. Nobody wants to go there anyways, so stop messin with it and failing at it. (I am quite aware that we have succeeded in man of our attempts to pull whatever info from that planet, but we also fail to fully complete many of these missions as well.

Re:Lost contact with mars rover *DOH*

O.K. Where's the appreciation for a pioneering spirit?

I thought that the people on this site had some...considering the way we all work on our cars.

You know we would't have cars to work on if the people who were inventing them listened to all the naysayers. Remember the horse & buggy?

We wouldn't be living here in America if the Queen of Spain decided not to fund Columbus' explorations. She faced opposition but it was proven to be a worth while venture.

We don't rag on people when they miscalculate their A/F ratio & blow their engines...so why be so hard on NASA?

When something doesn't go exactly right on our turbo systems, we don't just tear it all out & forget about it. We keep trying to succeed. Even though there are times that we fail. This is what defines a "winner's attitude".

It's Human nature to explore. We also test, ask questions & find new ways of doing things. This is how we grow as a species.

What those people are doing at NASA is HARD. Real hard. Cut them some slack.

Re:Lost contact with mars rover *DOH*

Nothing wrong with pioneering spirit but tell me what have we really learned from space exploration in the last 5 years that actually helps us as a society. Of course there is going to be technology advancements and so forth but really 50 million in a Nasa program or research for Cancer tell me what the general public will choose. How About more of the study effets of pollution on the planet we live on. I'm hard on these Nasa guys because they are suppose to be the best of the best yet they keep screwing up over and over again. If they actaully set out a mission and proved it's worth I may have a different point of view but really if we ever go to Mars what do we hope to find there. A planet that never had any life and no real gain for the human race.

What mars rover? Are you guys talking about a land rover? I drove my friends land rover discovery and damn those things are sweet... I got to get me one.

was that there weak ass excuse for why it would only last 90 days? they are dumb they need some window wipers and some windex spray attached to them solar panels

MakAttack 01-23-2004 12:07 AM

Re:Lost contact with mars rover *DOH*

Damn Straight!!! If we're smart enough to make somethin that'll roam Mars all by itself, then we should have at least equipped this ---- with some Windex and wipers.

stretch-d 01-23-2004 12:09 AM

Re:Lost contact with mars rover *DOH*

Chris, Thank you for your reply.

Sometimes there are periods of time where important discoveries are few, but this time is not one of them. I'll give you just three examples.

Just a few years ago we got to see with our own eyes, in real time, a meteor impact on Jupiter. Many people talked about it & thought that it could happen to us but didn't take it seriously. Because of our active participation in space exploration, that threat was proven to be real.

Now, before it happens, we can plan for a defense & stop something that could put an end to all life on this planet.

Second, there are the medical advances in CAT SCAN & MRI technologies that were originaly developed for the exploration of space and the things that exist there.

Third...There are currently satelites orbiting the Earth that have revealed the damage caused by air pollution & monitor the status of our atmosphere. Without these we would be blind to our situation and without a means to stop the ill effects.

These are only three examples of a multitude of reasons to invest in space.

...and with all due respect, I urge you to become more informed on a subject that you plan on having such a strong opinion about.

Actually it is too cold for windex on Mars. But since it is just dust, they shoud just throw a terry cloth on board and have a monkey wipe the ---- off.

I think it sucks that NASA in the old days flew to the moon and back with less computing power than my TI-83, and now, some 30 years later, with more technology than we can handle, they can only have the rover last 18 days... I think we're getting dumber as a species... Maybe if I sniff more gas I'll be better off.

projekteg 01-24-2004 11:01 AM

Re:Lost contact with mars rover *DOH*

ummmmmm....... is it just me or with all of the technology and money spent, they weren't able to put some type ow windshield wiper device on the solar panels, especially since they knew the dust would be a problem before they even made the damn thing ::)

Johnyquest 01-24-2004 01:28 PM

Re:Lost contact with mars rover *DOH*

I think a good solution for the dust would have been two nozzles pointign @ the solar panels and a few c02 cartridges, like the ones we use for airguns. When the ------- thing gets to dusty, pop the cartridge and blow the fuckers off. Problem solved; .25 cent solution. doh!

BTW- You aren't going to hear about what the gov / nasa / etc has discovered during our lifetimes until it's perfected and / or there is a NEED to tell us. Remember all the secret jets that were just recently revealed but in use for 40 years? Well, yeah. if they tell us, they tell the world... and that kind of doesn't give us much of an advantage, does it?

..have some patience, and let them be! I'll be the first to say that i'll go to mars! Wasn't there a book... that said somthing like that's where us men are from, anyways ;)
