losing oil pressure

okay, i've got the 4.9l inline 6 in my truck, and i've replaced the oil pump because i had no pressure at idle with the old pump (removal showed bad scoring of the pump internals) and now, it takes 20-25 minutes before pressure goes to 0 at idle, when i know i didnt ---- it up or anything, if im 15-20 mins into a town with a bunch of lights, i drop like 5 psi between lights, until i get no pressure, and my valvetrain starts to sound like a diesel fuel pump (good giveaway that ive got no pressure, i know valves need adjusted anyways though). is there some way i can install an electric pump vs my mechanical?

pump looks like

i have no problem with raising the motor to drop the pan, and install a fitting running through the pan (braided steel line w/ fitting to bolt to block, and compression fitting for clamping to the pan) and installing an external electric, but, is there something you guys know of? i really never heard of this problem before, anywhere, so i dunno whats wrong :'( :7

Re: losing oil pressure

you have no oil pressure because your rod and main bearings are fucked, maybe you could retrofit a oil pump from a v12 alison fighter plane engine they put out like a coked up porn star.

my compressions on target, i dont have any bearing play (barely 100k on motor, these things go for 500k) and besides, what is bad bearings gonna do to my oil pressure?

just add a extra 10qts of gear oil and drive it untill it dies :1

i dont have any bearing play so you wiggled the rods with your fingers when the pan was off ::)

what is bad bearings gonna do to my oil pressure?give you 0 at idle when warm because it just pisses past the bearings back to the pan.

well, turns out that something IS indeed fucked, 49psi at startup, progresses to about 5-10 at 2 grand on the expressway, once its warm. gauge bottoms out at idle

def a bearing issue. I had the same thing before i checked and saw all the metal in my oil pan :y

Hey this happend to me like 10mins ago .. swapped my Y7 to a y8 mani.. got it all runnnig good .. but the oil line b4 was ran inbetween the y7 mani cuz its open .. so i just cut it and got a brass fitting that splits it and i put it together but i guess just by hand because i was in a hurry fighting the rainy weather .. so i didnt crimp the little pieces on the nylon tubing and i took it for a test drive and like 3 blocks away i notices no oil pressure .. and i shut her off and coasted as far as i could.. checked the oil .. there was none all came out ... so ill be pushing it 3 blocks when it stops raining and ill make a run to the autoparts store in the morning b4 work for somt oil and a new fitting .. :P :P :P

i already had the pan off and for 105k miles it came out clean, just sludge and carbon from walmart oil and ---- filters.

i just dumped in a gallon of lucas, 2 quarts of 20w50 oil, and 1/2 a quart of generic lucas ($6/quart), and now i get 33ish psi at running above 2 grand, 25-30psi between 1300 and 2000, and from idle (600rpm) i get like 11-12psi. definitely beats what i got before, which was 1 and 10

So you just spent 60 bucks for something that will bandaid the problem for 3 months? :X

i'm guessing this is a ford? I have the same motor in my 85 f150, only has 110 on the clock, still runs like a champ. the truck is a pile of ---- tho.

Re: losing oil pressure

WOW!! People tell you that your bearings are shot and you say that you know they're in good condition? How is this? Did you pull even one main or rod cap? Pretty much the only way you are going to have no oil pressure, especially when the engine is warm, is when the main, rod, and or cam bearings have waaayyyyy too much clearance. When this happens the excess bearing clearance acts like an internal oil leak. Then you say that your old oil pump had severe scoring. Did you happen to think about the fact that all the oil in your engine has to pass through the oil pump. Whatever passed through the oil pump to score the cast iron that the oil pump is made is definitely going to wreak havoc on your bearings. There are other possibilities, but in my pea sized brain this is a dead giaway to your problem. Let us know when that time bomb goes off. :-X

that lucas stuff is crap. in the store in that stupid little clear geared thingy it may look like it helps, but under heat and pressure it actually foams = BAD.
