Was looking through an autotrader mag

And saw a volvo S60R. Made me think about their weird 5 cylinder engines. I mean, most engines have companion cylinders and it's a pretty easy concept to understand, but what's the deal with the internal dynamics of a 5 cylinder. I mean when you set a honda at TDC, it's 2 cylinders up top, and 2 on the bottom. How is the 5 cylinder set up, and what about vibrations and ----?

Yeah, if anything, the engine will run smoother. I think it just seems weird because it's an odd number, but it's all gravy.

Re: Was looking through an autotrader mag

Instead of having a cycle of 2 at tdc at a time there is only 1 at tdc at any given moment. This is because on a 4cyl 4 stroke the crank turns 720 degrees per loading, firing, burning, and exhausting. This means each piston is offset 720/4=180deg for smoothness. A 5cyl on the other hand has it at 720/5=144deg. So when one is at tdc the next closest one is at 36deg from tdc. This is how it is at least afaik. There's no real companion cylinders, it's just the total 4 stroke 720deg is divided among the 5 cylinders, with equal time, 144deg, between firings instead of 180deg.

ok i was thinking it worked like that because i remembered how a 6 cylinder has the rods offset 120* and an 8 cylinder has them 90* so i just didn't know if the companion cylinders thing was a big deal or not. And i'm all set with the sweedish wheels :1
