Traxass has a big hold on the market and their RCs are "cheap"($) because the Hobbby shops make up $ on the back end in service. I go to 4 different hobby shops around me and each allways has at least 3 and i've seen up to 10 Traxxas RCs waiting to be worked on for some reason(mainly transmissions and steering problems).
Not really, I just said they're not that bad. Of course they all have their issues but overall they're easy to use and generally pretty durable. All R/C's break and it just so happens that Traxxas is carried by any respectable hobby shop. IMO if people aren't smart enough to work on the transmission or steering themselves they probably shouldn't own one and get something a bit more simple.

Plus as long as you didn't have some kind of fire breathing small block motor or a .21 conversion you could drive a stock T-Maxx forever without transmission problems if you did a forward only conversion (not hard).

ok im still looking around and have been looking at towerhobbies.com closer and am noticing that each car comes with different engines even with in the toy makers line up.. what is the reasoning behind this and what exactly does it mean.. and where can you find the specs for them..(i know on the car page) but im talking speed specs.. also what would be the first couple key upgrades when buying one to look forward to when something goes wrong?

Upgrades are not allways necessary. Most are just bling factor. The only must have on a RTR car is a tuned pipe which will help the stock motor come to life. You can run the factory engine till it pops, if youre new to nitro thats a good thing. As far as specs, most companys dont list specs on factory installed engines. They just list estimated speed #s.

The CEN will be crazy fast out of the box. I think they claim like allmost 80mph out of the box. The HPI will be more conservatine at about 40MPH or so. If you get the HPI a good upgrade engine will be an OS .18tz. At 1.5HP it will disintegrate tires with no problems. Another thing that will affect speed is nitro content. Most people run 20% because its cheap. I run 30% after I break in my motors with 20%. The down side is that the engines wear faster on the higher nitro content. Nothing too drastic though. But the extra power is awsome!!

My 1/8th Kyosho Inferno GT(the Ferrari in my avatar) is hitting 50mph right now out of the box. I will be doing a motor swap and a single speed conversion soon with the hopes of getting 65-70mph out of it.

awesome!! yea i was thinking the CEN because of the 2 speed awd configuration and it will only go as fast as i make it.. so there is a proper engine break in procedure?? like so much nitro to so much gas for so many hours of operation? just want to make sure i have the process's down before i ruin a $500 toy

Yeah, break in is really important. Here is a link of a really good method of doing it.http://www.johnnycoolguy.com/JCGR/ma..._break-in.html
