Lojack and shit

I just got a bike and I'm terrified of it being stolen. I want to find a way to have it be more safe than just a caliper lock.

I saw a thread on a CBR forum about free gps tracking. You take a newer cell phone and hard wire a car charger to the battery. The phone is always on and then if your bike gets stolen, call the police and tell them the serial number of your phone.

Good idea in concept, but i asked a cop friend and he said that in order to do that the police would have to subopena the cell phone company and they hate doing that.

Second idea is to get a nextel phone with the gps tracking. There is a site (http://www.mologogo.com/) that all you do is download their program to your phone and you can track your phone online wherever it goes.

The downsides to this is that it is untested to leave it running for extended periods of time and it is unknown if it would crash. Also, you have to pay 35 cents a day for the web usage of the phone. This is only about 10 bucks a month but i'd like to avoid the cost if possible.

The third idea is lojack.... seems to be good and they have a money back guarantee, but it's $400 give or take and its not flawless...

any other HMT ideas for cheap bike theft deterrent? It seems like the only sure fire way is to be able to track the bike when it is gone.

Park it in your kitchen.

Word, just bring it inside...that is really the only 100% sure way to lock it down.

Otherwise cable lock through the spokes/caliper. That way the bike would have to be at least lifted to take it.

Are you parking this thing outside overnight? If so, you might want to re-think your situation.

outside overnight... plain sight.

lock through the spokes would be good... I've got a caliper lock in the mail and i always lock the forks.

ive read up on this and it seems like one way is just getting a couple big guys that put a pole through the spokes and lift it into a truck.... you can't really defend against that short of locking it to something. There is nothing to lock to though which is why i want a tracking system.

Never had a bike myself, but this seems like it is the same as the dilemma of all security. If someone wants something they can take it. You just have to throw enough "road-blocks" out there that someone will choose another target.

Do you not have a car that you could anchor it to? Just go through your wheel and the wheel of your car.

I would just anchor a steel plate with a ring on it to the pavement. Then you can at least lock onto that.

I still think driving the thing into the apt is a valid idea, unless you have to go up stairs to get to your place.

dont ancor it to your cars wheel...you will end up with out a bike and 1 less rim

Best bet is to ancor a bull ring in to the pavment...and lock it to that.... or bring it inside
