Yeah, I say go for it. My old boss used to stay at his garage over night quite a bit. Had a kitchen in there, kept his toothbrush etc. there too. I think if your confident that you can do it, and you are really serious, I say go for it. This could turn out to be a great business opportunity as well!!!

Re:Living in a garage... am I crazy?
Hell yeah. That's my dream house. A friend of mine worked at a muffler shop and above it was a small living quarters. He lived up top for free and worked in the shop for good money. That was the pimp ----. There were some parties that went on in that place. I have wired a few very large RV garages with attached living quarters and I have wanted to rent one of them. The people that build them keep them for themselves. One of them is being lived in by the owners kid and when that little ---- gets a ------- job and moves out I'm all over it. It has one HUGE 13 foot garage door with a ~60ft deep garage and I think it's around 25 feet wide. The living quarters consists of one bedroom(kinda small but who cares), one full bathroom, dining room(I don't even know what these are for), and a full kitchen with everything a normal kitchen has. It's also very nice with plenty of storage on top of the living quarters. I want to move in sooooo bad.

HELL YEAH!! I'd live in a garage if I was not married. A friend of mine lives in a 4500sqft wharehoue. He built 2 rooms inside it for a bedroom and living room/kitchen. It already had a full bathroom in it. His place rocks.

Typically the zoning laws would be that you have to operate some sort of business out of the area, This is without even seeing or knowing what it is zoned for, But opening a business is not hard, but you have to pay taxes! There usually isn't any laws prohibiting you from living there(to protect you interests) if it isn't you soul address! But differn't states have differnt laws! If it is zoned correctly, you could have it re-zoned into a residential estate, and wouldn't require you to open a business, and then you could live there. And that would be cool!

Re:Living in a garage... am I crazy?
Most zoneing works like on the basis of degrees of harm to the area, for instance when they zone a plot for industrial/comercial it means that you are allowed a fairly detrimental inhabitant in the area, but under the guise of comercial also entails rental property i.e. apartment living. Hence the theory of loft homes, the buying of warehouses and converting them into domiciles. In other words, unless your city zoning is retarded they will allow you to live there.

I would do it, and if all goes well, you can quit your day job and have your own business. But what he said is true, check the zoning classification on your local/county engineering/planning office.
