Limited Slip Differential
I have read about Quaife, Kaaz, LSD, Cusco and OBX limited slip differentials. But, has anyone tried or have any information about the performance of the Phantom Grip differential? I got the picture and information below from JC Whitney's site. It's looks odd compared to the others. Cost $299.99.
http://www.jcwhitney.com/wcsstore/jc...6579774449c8aa CUSTOM-FIT LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL The ultimate performance on the street or track…even under full boost! Smooth power! Maximum traction! Feel the Phantom Grip difference! Strong, durable and easy to install! It acts as a disc-type limited slip during corning and braking. Disc plates exert pressure against spider gears using spring pressure to regulate slippage at the wheels. You'll accelerate faster and exit corners at higher peeds. It works as a locker during hard acceleration. Disc plates pivot, locking spiders and causing both wheels to exert equal ressure to the road. Less torque steer than an ordinary differential. Manufacturer's limited lifetime warranty. |
Re: Limited Slip Differential
The phantom slip is back for more...

Re: Limited Slip Differential
Still retains the factory diff just basically converts it to lock similar to what some 4x4 guys use.Eliminate the weak point and bad traction in one move by buying a full replacement diff. The OBX seams to be getting good reviews for what it costs and it is only $75 more than that piece of crap.

Re: Limited Slip Differential
Ravage70 and 90dx, thanks for the info. I'll give the OBX a try.

Re: Limited Slip Differential
Im going to get one this winter as well for my B18 setup thats going in.I broke a few trannys and it was always the diff including a 92 GSR tranny i pulled out of a friends car last weekend.I think from what I understand it is a knock off of the Quaife at 1/3 of the price.I heard as well that it is a good idea to go through it and re torque everything to double check it is in spec.Im not the tranny expert though so maybe Mista bone will have some hting to contribute.

Re: Limited Slip Differential
The biggest problem with the phantom is it uses the stock spider gears. It actualy puts MORE stress on the spider gears by locking the diff under a load. Would you trust stock spider gears? I sure wouldnt :) Had the OBX LSD been available when I bought my Quaife I would have been all over that ----.
one of my blown trannies hah! http://img371.imageshack.us/img371/5630/diff5iu.jpg |

Re: Limited Slip Differential
The last one I used was a kazz, it worked crazy good but the front tires dont last long, (scrubs in corners) and the speedo gear alone was 135.00 japan stock :P

Re: Limited Slip Differential
i picked up the obx for $400 shipped. can't beat that price. haven't installed it yet, i'll be putting it in this winter. it looks decent. they claim lifetime warranty... we'll have to wait and see.

Re: Limited Slip Differential
Just installed one in our project. I'll let you guys know the results when we fire it up.
Phantom Grip aka Phantom Ghost aka Phantom Slip That ---- may cause both tires to turn a bit initially, but a try a real launch on it and its ----. It will SLIP like a one pegged -----. OBX is my choice at the moment for LSD for price. But like what some of the other guys said, make sure you double check all bolts and make sure they are up to torque. G'Luck. |
Re: Limited Slip Differential
I like my OBX LSD. Been using it since May with absolutely no complaints.

Re: Limited Slip Differential
i dont doubt the bad effects but i had a similar one (arizona speed and machine one) that grabbed both even under the hardest launches...
highroller:why would an lsd cause your front tires to scrub, it should pretty much release in turns shouldnt it? |
Re: Limited Slip Differential
there is always some preload on clutch type LSD's, so they may scrub a little.
Gear type and Viscious shouldn't scrub. Welded does scrub, but I love the way it reacts, to me it's way more predictable and controlable than even quality clutch type LSD's. |
Re: Limited Slip Differential
ya my brothers old tranny was a j1 i beleive, got it from josh ross, had a phantom snap in it as well, ---- all he did was grab 2nd on a stock b16 snap, dif exploded and so did parts of the tranny ::) id rather fight getting my axels out witha obx then try to find another b series cable tranny.

Re: Limited Slip Differential
I have it on my Teg. I heard bad stuff about Phantom Grip as well. But I dont care. I got that ---- almost free. If it gives... then off to another tranny. I just want an ITR tranny next time.....
