Lightening flywheels?
I don't wanna dish out the 350 dollars to get an aluminum flywheel, and from what I hear aluminum is not neccesarily the best way to go. Has anybody here lightened their stock flywheel, and if so, what did you use or where did you go to get it done? About how much was it? Thanks,

Re: Lightening flywheels?
is this for the celi?
i think acid motorosports has a sale going on flywheels |
Re: Lightening flywheels?
I don't want to buy one, I want to get my stock one machined.

Re: Lightening flywheels?
Had mine shaved down by a local machine shop.Got it down to 12lbs for $60 CDN.This is the second one I have had done and never had a problem.I don't think you could go to much lighter as he shaved as much as you could safely do.

pu$$y!!!!! |
Re: Lightening flywheels?
cant shave down too much or it crack or break on u
u can shave it from the surface top so u dont have to get it balanced again if u shave it from the back u'll probably have to balance it |

Re: Lightening flywheels?
The cost to PROPERLY lighten a flywheel is $175, which includes balancing to 10,000 rpms.
the cost of a XACT is $220.......... http://www.bettendorf.com/~mrbone/pi...utFlywheel.jpg If the flywheel is not balanced it will develop stress cracks around the mounting bolts.......... http://www.bettendorf.com/~mrbone/pi...ywheelboom.wmv http://www.bettendorf.com/~mrbone/pi...wheelboom1.jpg http://www.bettendorf.com/~mrbone/pi...wheelboom2.jpg |

BTW John Shepard now owns the white DSM.......

Re: Lightening flywheels?
Any reputable machine shop will check the balance after there done.Do not let some shady fucker shave it, as I have a friend with one glass eye from a flywheel that let go at the dragstrip.I'm assuming this isn't a 10k rpm race machine or anything similar?

Re: Lightening flywheels?
all i am sayin is you get what you pay for so no guarrentees on machinging it.
|
Re: Lightening flywheels?
I 100% agree. If I could at all afford one I would buy rather than have it shaved but I'm so low budget and the machine shop I use is one I highly trust as far as workmanship goes.

Re: Lightening flywheels?
I have used facotry lightned flywheels for years on many builds. No problems but I guess sometimes damage does occur havent personally experinced it or seen it until now. IMO its worth the change

Re: Lightening flywheels?
It would be worth it to install a scatter shield. I don't know if they exist for front wheel drives, but my uncle always had one in his vette. Small price to pay to save your ass in case you grenade a clutch or flywheel. Shrapnel sucks ass.

Re: Lightening flywheels?
1 don't go too light
2 get it balanced |
Re: Lightening flywheels?
I'm getting some local guys (very good shop, 40 years racing experience) to lighten my flywheel and balance my flywheel/pressure plate assembly. I guess they're gunna test it up to 10,000 rpms, so I'm good with that. 150 bucks for 7 pounds aint bad.
