Jay it depends on the gun, and what kind of projectile.

Pellets you normally find at mit-mart have almost 0 penitration. They're blunt nosed wad-cutters for shooting paper targets. There are plenty of pellets that are sharp, round/domed, or hollow point that will penitrate skin.
We shoot squirrles off bird feeders constantly. You can't break their skin on 11 pumps with a blunt nose wad cutter from 37'. However you can penitrate at any point (including the skull) from the same distance at 7 pumps with a standard copper BB, or round nose pellet.


Oh, and while a BB/Pellet starts at .177. You can get pellets and round balls (not BB's) in 0.177, 0.20, 0.22, 0.25, 0.35(9mm), 0.45, 0.50".
My next door neighboor growing up was into match shooting air-rifles.

This one time on the bus we were being little assholes on the bus and tossing things out the windows and spitting and such. well my perfect opportunity came and this guy was too close to the bus so i leaned on out and spit perfectly in his face from like 35. Bam-o right in the face. As i spit i recognized his face and realized it was the neighborhood retarded kid that works at Burger King.

why i know buk is lieing.
i got shot in the foot with a pellet out of an air rifle. entry wound was not big at all, went through boot, into side of foot and got lodged behind a toe bone. still have the 2 inch long scar on base of left foot. it took 3 surgery's to finally get the pellet out.

all i got is a cheap ass cross man air rifle and i ran out of bbs a long time ago...

and the only bbs i have are the coppper ones.. the round balls.. that would pretty much bounce off :1
