Late night HMT intercooler action

I'm not sure how many of you are following my thread about turbocharging my cousin's Accord:

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...hp?topic=55261

But last night/this morning (1 A.M.) Chris and I were trying to figure out how the heck we were going to do the piping from the J-pipe to the existing intercooler piping..
http://img490.imageshack.us/img490/7614/pict00141ml.jpg
The J-pipe was big and pointing in the opposite direction of what we needed :l

Well, I brainstormed, and after a short run to Home Depot we got what we needed:

http://img482.imageshack.us/img482/2181/pict00010qi.jpg

http://img482.imageshack.us/img482/7551/pict00024mo.jpg

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/1849/pict00062bw.jpg

Chris chopped down the J-pipe to nothing, I put a HD bend on it, then used another part of the j-pipe to bend some more, used part of the turbo rubber piping from the Probe Turbo to connect that to even another piece of the j-pipe, then used a transition coupler from that small pipe to the 2.5" pipe, then that 2.5" pipe connects to the rest :8 :y Finally got done right around 3 A.M. after all the parts running

;D

Also, today after we get the seals we're installing the 450's (Going Frank style... "just press those bitches in") and the BOV, however the BOV piping is 2 1/4 and the regular piping is 2 1/2, and we can't find any home depot transition couplers :S Also John Kerr (j-k-tuning) is going to chip the p06, so we might have this thang running by Friday ;D

Looks good. You guys seem to have done a VERY clean job on it. Hope it runs well for you. HA, my Dad walks by: "Wow, all THEIR stuff is all crome and shiny." LOL. He's a ricer. :P I DO like that manifold though.

Other than the serious amount of rust and the homo painted engine parts, it looks good. :l I predict busted couplers in your future though....

your going to melt right through there, the temps coming from that turbo will eat that rubber piece of ---- alive. other than that, it looks good.

what manifold is that? Looks hot

That butyl rubber elbow won't hold the boost, unless you're only boosting a punk-ass 6 or 8 psi....

Lots of guys have tried, all have failed.

i boosted 10-12 punds on a rubber elbow and never had a problem....

Re: Late night HMT intercooler action

ehh i didnt recognize it. I agree that turbo is mad small, prolly be running out of air by 5250 on 9 psi

get some silicone cuoplers from lsdmotorsports .. that couple will eventually pop.

Re: Late night HMT intercooler action

I was under the impression that the "big" 16g turbo supported ~380whp. We're not shooting for tons of power, I think Chris is just wanting to run ~8-10 psi and see what kind of power he makes.

Re: Late night HMT intercooler action

thats a "big" 16G ........... :-\ Is that turbo also from SSauto?

Re: Late night HMT intercooler action

you can goto kragen, or shuckers or whateve the ---- its called on that side of the country, but they have metal adapters from 2 to 2.5 or 2 1/4 to 2.5, then just weld that onto the 2.5 pipe and then you can use a 2 inch coupler to cnnect the pipes or a 2 1/4 to connect them depending on what pipe/transition piece you have.

Re: Late night HMT intercooler action

The normal 16-G compressor wheel is 1.83" at the inducer and 2.36" at the exducer. The Big 16-G is 1.89" at the inducer and 2.68" at the exducer. That is just over 5/16" (8mm) larger than the normal 16-G exducer and the same size as the GReddy 18-G (inducer diameter is only .10" smaller than a 18-G).
Who knows

Thanks Scott, I'll have to check that out :)

Oh, and yes its from ssauto

dan, you still need to bore those seals out a little bit.

same with me.

also for the 2.5 to 2.25 trasition just use the 2 " couplers....the hd couplers can stretch quite a bit

If you're bored one night, grab some goggles and look in the engine bay while you're boosting so you can watch the thing bulge out like a party balloon :3

You can use it on the intake side, but on the compressor side you run that ---- at your own peril. You'd do better to use PVC on the cold side....

A friend ran a PVC elbow into his Mitsu TD04HL-18T with no problems. The car was his daily driver, plus he took it to five or six track events....

Re: Late night HMT intercooler action

I use the exact same elbow right off of my turbo and it's just fine. The only problem I can see is with it being closer to the exhaust manifold.

How much boost are you making? Maybe if you're under 10 psi that POS will work, but not for any real boost....

My bad then....

I need to get used to the different mindset and different circumstances....

Base boost on a stock Saab is about 9 psi, rising to 15.5. Modded ones hit 20-25 psi easily...

Re: Late night HMT intercooler action

Hopefully the heat doesn't become an issue.

The plan is to get the BOV and the rest of the piping on/done tomorrow, get the 450's in and get the ECU sent out, so that when the ECU gets back we'll be golden :)

Chris says this is his first/last turbo setup on this car, then he wants an Evo VIII :S I think the 16g will be fine for his application

I hope so Jeff, I hope so...let me guess, couple of days for johnny's?

wrap that coupler in tape. I have a laer of duct tape wrapped cleanly in black electrical tape. Same coupler has held up for almost a year now.

I know this site is all about cheap ghetto mods and ----, but why skimp on someting so cheap as a hose? Cheap Home Depot ---- is about as reliable as a 2 dollar ho.

When I build it, I want to do it once and I want to do it right.

No going back under the ------- car at 3 a.m. in 10 degree weather to fix a blown hose.
No strange sounds when I'm boosting.
No smoke.
No fire.
No bullshit....

Well, why the hell would we be out at 3 a.m. when its 10 degrees out... also, from now til next winter it wont get that cold, and why would you go under the car to get to the pipe coming from the turbo :l stike 1.

Unlike you, Spanky, I don't have to be in bed before the street lights come on, so I'm often out until 2 or 3 in the morning. And my turbo to IC pipe is best accessed from under the car. But I won't have to ---- with it because I used decent hose and good clamps...

vroom, psh and POP when that POS hose pretends it's a defective condom.

Anything in that abortion of an engine bay is likely to need a fire extinguisher, especially that Tinker-Toy turbo when you push it out of it's efficiency range...That's not a moped, son, that's a car! Put a real snail in it.... :3

lmao. We've got a regular comedian here :S

I usually go to bed at a decent hour (12-1) because some people have these things called JOBS (::cough::), and also in my case this thing called COLLEGE. Be pretty stupid of me to stay up and only get 4 hours of sleep, not wouldn't it?

We've got what, 3 or 4 guys vouching this thing works great on their car, if it works it works, if it doesn't, I don't care :8

Anything huh.. so the engine is going to just spontaneously combust? This isn't a BMW :6 I think the 16g is good enough for what Chris wants. Not everyone wants full boost at redline :l

Sleep is for pussies. Five hours is more than enough... ;D And if you're really doing the COLLEGE thing you should know that, or at least you're going to. At least that how it was when I was an undergrad...and when I was in grad school.

OK. Fair enough. But seriously...one day when the engine is warm, put on a pair of goggles and watch the hose while you boost.

Good boost management will taper the boost to prevent overboost at redline. That's also what your wastegate is for....
