it recognized it b4 even if the hd was empty and now nothing, wtf? could the damn utility fucked up the hd somehow? or wtf. :1

Make sure the jumpers are on right if you hdd uses one. I know that 99% of laptops (IDE) don't use one.
Format the drive again with FAT32 and NTFS and see if one them works. If your drive still works on the desktop and not the laptop, i suggest you load default bios settings on the laptop and try again. If not, then it's time to buy an external closure for it and use it as an external hard drive.

Re: laptop wont recognize hd

Bios is the configuration and setting of the motherboard/chipset that is easily accessible by usually pressing (F1,F2,F10 or DEL), the button is usually displayed on the screen on the first screen when laptop powers on.
power on the laptop, enter bios, then go right all the way to the last tab (usually), where you exit and save(don't exit yet).
There should be an option to load default settings for the bios, do that. If it still doesn't work, then try downloading * hiren's boot cd *(exactly how it's spelled) and try some hard disk utilities.
USB flash drives are the new floppies, BTW

Re: laptop wont recognize hd

so you took a laptop HD and installed xp on it by hooking it up to your desktop PC? :3

unless there is something out there that I dont know about, you cant do that. you have to formate the HD on the system your going to be using it on if you want it to boot the OS.

Possible, but yeah usually a bad idea.

Operating systems tend to flip out when all the hardware is switched...

Re: laptop wont recognize hd

had done it twice before, to the same HD and it worked fine on the laptop. since it had vista, it wont recognize xp w/o installing a sata achi controller or someshit. so thats what i was doing.

Re: laptop wont recognize hd

glad that you got it working.

as far as the desktop install then moving to the laptop....

i have tried it a couple times, each time it would never load and gave lots of system errors and blue screens and was informed by a computer friend of mine that you should never do it that way. so i never did it after that.

question...

why do you do it that way?

Re: laptop wont recognize hd

xp wont load into the laptops sata hd. dunno why. from what i read, xp doesnt support sata drives, and if i put the xp disc into the laptop it wont install it....but then again it worked on the desktop. go figure.

so i install it on the desktop, and add the right drivers so the laptop can recognize the HD. weird. idk. but it works.
