Laptop RAM question

Can I use PC133 RAM in a powerbook that originally came with PC100?

It's an older powerbook g4, first gen so that's why it uses PC100. Anybody know for sure?

Re: Laptop RAM question

As long as they have the same pins, I'm almost certain you can. The PC133 ram will just run at PC100 speeds. Thats how it works on desktop motherboards.

Re: Laptop RAM question

all ram should be backward compatible as long as it the same pins. EX PC3100 will work in a PC2100 machine

this is what i was told by the guy i bought my RAM from

what does backwards compatible mean?

ive put ram into a laptop and a desktop before where all the pins matched up but the memory wasnt recognized..

Re: Laptop RAM question

Backwards compatible means that the newer faster memory can still be used in older machines.

Try it, might work fine, might crap out on ya. We have shitty computers and work and some of them sure don't like pc2700 RAM. Were ordering some pc2100, which should fix the problem.

Ive been told it works in most cases. But I haven't tried it yet. I bought an older laptop off of ebay to tune my car with and as soon as it gets here I need to upgrade the memory. I asked my computer nerd friend the same question and he said this pc133 memory will work on a pc100 laptop board.

Stick it in, Jon. Do you need to be told how? :P

Re: Laptop RAM question

I would just try it. I've always heard that it's better to stay with the same stuff, but never heard that mixing/matching won't work. Only problem I can see is if the timing was different, because you can't set timing differently for each dimm...it's one setting for all the sluts. Why not just find some cheap pc100? Either way, if you already have pc100 that's the fastest it's going to run. I would just get the pc100 crap and KNOW it works.

Re: Laptop RAM question

The problem with memory is that price is directly affected by demand. If there is a low demand for a certain type of chip, price goes up cuz they don't manufacture it anymore, but the few ppl that need it are willing to pay...

So ya, older PC100 is more expensive in most cases than PC133. Even though PC133 is better/faster. However as long as the board isn't too wacked, it should be able to handle the PC133 fine.

Edit: I don't know jack about apple's so I could be wrong.

I'm bidding on this on ebay so I don't have it yet. I assume the correct way to install memory in a laptop is sledge+prybar?

You might also need a torch and/or plasma cutter :1
