While it does sound like the OS install on the box is toasty, the "got really hot" part could indicate a fan failure. If that's the case, re-installing the OS is only going to temporarily alleviate the problem. I'd verify that the fan on the CPU is working as well as the cooling system fan before doing anything else. If they're not, you can replace them and it might be salvagable. If they are bad and you continue, you're going to fry the processor and/or other components with continued usage.

When you turn the computer on, do you hear any fans? On many laptops, you can remove a couple of screws and pop out the keyboard, from there you can get access to the processor and see if the fan on it is working. Otherwise, you might have to access it from underneath. I haven't personally worked on that model, so I can't say for sure. It isn't hard to figure it out though.

As far as re-installing the OS, just use a bootable CD. You might have to go into the bios and set your CD/DVD rom drive to be the first boot device. Once you do that and reboot, it will read the CD first and boot from it into Setup.
