also, if you put high mhz ram in a low mhz machine it downclocks the ram. if you have slow ram, and put it into a machine that uses faster ram, it slows the bus down on the computer.

and when you say backwards compatible. pc3200 will work in 27oo but will 4200 work in 2700 cuz i think 4200 is ddr2 but mines just ddr

WoW runs fine on my comp. it might be the ram on for your graphics chip/your graphics chip its self.. most mobile 3d graphics cards are usualy only 32mb. have you tryed running the game at a lower resolution or cutting down the quality settings a bit? / how fast is the processor in your lap top? and how many other programs are always running when the game is running?

basically you have tofind out what the max speed that your chipset supports, like for instance if it supports up to pc3300 and you put in pc4200 or whatever, then you will either get a memory error and your ---- won't boot or it will default to the max setting that it supports. basically the way it works is, well ---- explaining all that, but yea, just find out what your chipset for your laptop supports from hewlett packard and make sure to get the same speeds, don;t mix and match. because if it does work, it will default to the slower one.
