Got into the James Clark School Of Engineering too, which is hard to do nowadays. Just thought id share. Ill be even more poor come next year.

Make sure you stock your dorm with lots of Cigarhettes, Coffee, and Cocaine ... Seriously, if you don't you wont make it. College sucks cause you party till 5 in the morning, knowing you have class at 9, than wake up puzzled why you aren't motivated to go to class.

But I'm a local to the University of Maryland and can say its a top notch college class/professor wise. You'll learn a lot of ---- there if you don't do what I listed above. What are you majoring in?

Re: just got accepted to maryland

civil engineering with a minor in mechanical most likely. The only reason I chose them over vtech or penn is they throw ALOT of money around. They have top of the line classes because they have crazy labs/resources.

Yeah i hear its pretty good, just its dirty/unsafe. Ill decide for myself. Thanks for the tip on the coffee/cocaine. I have insomnia but never take my medicine so i should be fine. I'm trying to get into classes with athlete reviews, because they basically give you all the information to pass the finals in the review packets. Plus i dont wanna miss too many classes cause of practice

ummm because there is a place around here named Bechtel. They're a huge engineering/construction firm. I interned for them last year and was offered a job out of high school. They have a place for me waiting after college with their civil engineering department working with either bridges or parks and rec. I just want the mechanical experience in case.

ummm we had a contest for architectural design at our school using CAD. I mess around with and free hand drawing at home. I entered a house design(2 story, 3 bedroom slab if you care) and won. Went to the internship for 6 months and worked my ASS off. whenever i wasn't working i would be talking to the bosses and everyone there. Alot of people there are into cars, but know nothing about them. They just spend the money. I helped a few people out was all around kiss-assey and they loved me.

Im going to the College Park campus. Didn't apply to umbc in baltimore because im not chinese so i wouldn't be allowed there.

Bechtel averages like 30-40k for their DRAFTERSSSSS. which means someone else hands you a drawing, you try to make sense of it and draw it, and they tell you to change some stuff around. They hire some people out of high school to do that. It's crazy. The company master drafters and positions ill be working in would be more like 60-80k, but im not expecting anything more than 30 RIGHT out of college. You should see the parking lot. BMW, mercedes, BMW, lamborghini, viper, bmw....its crazy

always wanted to do something with automotive engineering but i figure if the job is there and has the security...ill have the extra money to do what i want with cars.

Ford and GM use the car wind tunnel at Maryland, so ill try to post pics of some of the cool ---- there next year.

Re: just got accepted to maryland

---- i took drafting in HS. but i have been out of school for almost 8 years now, i'm prob a little rusty :1

60-80k for a college grad seems like BS to me :-\
another couple years of selling VW parts and will be in the mid-60's, w/ a GED and no college

Nah ill be too busy between practice and class to listen to anyones political bullshit. Theres nothing gayer than some rich punk ass college kid thinking he knows something about the world because he watched cnn one time. My way of looking at it is, if you dont have any real world experience in it, keep your damn mouth shut.

Penn State engineering program is not easy to get into. The rest of the school is relatively easy to get into.

Also, engineering classes are nothing like any other liberal arts classes. You sit in class for an hour or two, take notes, leave. Your first two years of school you will be learning about stuff that has been in practice for a very long time. I wouldn't worry to much about the interjection of your professors opinions as they are engineers too and engineers are generally moderate individuals.

As for your idea of double majoring, I really hope you like it there as you will be spending 5-6 years there easily. Typically engineering degrees require around 135 credits vs standard liberal arts majors require 100-120. You have to pack in a good amount of extra work and unless you enjoy killing yourself, it will take you longer than the standard 4 years. Most engineering students just take the 5 years as they know it doesn't make a difference because they have job security. I might have went to UMD if they didn't feel like being dicks and not accept any of my transfer credits. ---- them if they think I'm redoing all of my core classes.

Also to the kid who thinks college is a big ---- fest. What world do you live in? I go to bed at a normal time, drink a normal amount, and rarely have to work my ass off in classes. I'm a 3rd year Civil engineering student so I've taken the tough classes. 100-200 level engineering classes=hell. 300-400 level engineering classes are significantly easier.

BirdmanMD 02-17-2007 10:19 PM

Re: just got accepted to maryland

No im going to major in civil with a minor in mechanical. no double majors. Just plan on getting a bachelors and then if i need it to move up or whatever ill come back for my masters. Only if i absolutely need it though.

Inquisition: Anything else you could tell me or recommend as an engineering student? thanks for all the info.

Yeah ill be partying a lil, but im an athlete so 1.) i dont drink as much as most of my freinds 2.) no smoke ever enters my body 3.) ill be in the athletic dorms or in my own apartment most likely. So ill be slightly more low key.

im looking for apartments/houses down there so i can bring my car down and dont have to bum rides home whenever i need to come home. the campus is an hour away from my rents house, which isn't bad. But if you live on campus you cant have a car first year. I need my car there. although they might make an exception cause im an athlete. dunno

haha ill most likely be driving bo bo the magical pos chrysler. With full coverage including theft. so i hope someone steals it cause the insurance company doesn't know its worth about 1/10 of what they think its worth. its a piece.

If i get a new ride before then ill make sure to invest in either a garage or a REAL good alarm system/kill switch

Re: just got accepted to maryland

The best suggestion I can give to engineering students is learn what you need to do to get the grades you want. I like to hover in the 3.0-3.2 GPA range. I know what it takes for me to get those grades. In calculus classes it took me spending a couple hours a week doing problems to have success while in physic classes I could figure out how to do the problems very easily. I also suggest taking classes you are weak in at the local community college over the summer. It is alot easier to take 15 credits a semester and then take that other 6-8 credits over the summer to get that 18 credit a semester average. It costs a little extra money, but its the way to go if you don't like to always be stress about school. Also community college classes are smaller and "easier". The subject manner is almost exactly the same but the tests are generally easier. Classes like chemistry and calc are way better at the local community college. One last suggestion is to get to know your dean in your department. I don't even know our dean but I had some problems scheduling classes and they took care of me. Engineering makes a school look good. Your womens studies and other bullshit majors don't matter. People care about engineering and colleges generally take care of their engineering students.

HMTguy 02-18-2007 12:15 AM

Re: just got accepted to maryland

Amen to that, I had the dean erase a whole semester from my record, and I didn't even know they could do that :6

I'm still working to up my GPA from my dumb hoe ------ days, but that really helped.

It is if you have personality - you're surrounded by a bunch of women who are not being parentally supervised for the first time in their lives, so they ---- quite a lot. In order to get them to ---- you quite a lot, you have to talk to them with a smile on your face. Yes, I realise this is difficult, but trust me it is worth it.

PS - CE sucks. Go ME, EE, ChemE, etc.

EE and ChemE get paid better, Colin.

The only thing remotely interesting or difficult about ME is compressible fluid flow, everything else is applied common sense.

compressib;e fluid flow is just tons of fun. an I wouldn't say that dynamic systems and controls are really common sense, but you're right alot of the stuff is

Re: just got accepted to maryland

EE really isn't that much harder once you get over the fact that the logic used isn't linear like the building block physics we learned as toddlers, or faster paced sports/cars type stuff we grasp as teens. I just like to run my mouth and bait people. :P
