Washington: Five Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats harassed and provoked three US Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping route off the Iranian coast, over the weekend. The captain of one US vessel was in the process of giving the order to shoot when the Iranian ships began turning away, CNN said. A radio transmission from one of the Iranian ships said, "I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes," CNN reported, citing a US official. After the threatening radio communication, US sailors manned their ships' guns and were very close to opening fire,it said. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said that its high-speed boats never threatened the U.S. vessels during the encounter, insisting it only asked them to identify themselves, then let them continue into the Gulf. A Guards commander defended his force's right to identify ships in the sensitive waterway. Cosgriff, the commander of U.S. 5th Fleet, which patrols the Gulf and is based in nearby Bahrain, said the American vessels had been identified by Iranian authorities earlier in the day. "The group had been successfully queried by an Iranian ship, possibly a Revolutionary Guards ship, and two or three Iranian (shore) stations and an Omani station," Cosgriff told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday. The U.S. commander also said that the American ships were clearly marked and the incident took place during the day when they could be seen. "I can't help but conclude that it was provocative," Cosgriff said. who is lying? could it be evil iran? or the good us? |

destroyers have undergone extensive improvements since then and the rules of engagement are obviously reduced, i don't see starting war with a country because some boats dropped some boxes in the water. |

and no i don't hate america, the us navy is smart enough to defend themselves, they were about to shoot the iran boats but they didn't because the iranians took off, if the us navy would have destroyed all 5 boats i wouldn't care because they would probably be acting in their best interests, but since nothing happened i don't understand the big deal, no bleeding heart liberal ----, i just don't see the big deal because the ---- happens in iraq everyday and rarely gets mentioned. |

I know Americans aren't that smart, but this wouldn't have been enough for Bush to start his next war. As the story goes, there has to be a threat to the United States, which this wouldn't have been.

At the time they didn't know they were boxes, what they knew was they said over the radio we are going to blow you up. Then they saw them dropping things in the water. They probably went out and retrieved it and found out they were just boxes. But they didn't know at the time, they got threatened then saw things getting dropped into the water, one would naturally assume they are mines. As some of you know i juts came back from a split deployment from Qatar and iraq. In Qatar alls we did was intel collection and straits transit escorts for the ships. THIS HAPPENS all the time. The media just blew it out of proportion, they came closer then possible but that is the regular SOP for the IRGCN. They cruise around in about 5-7 TIR's or Peykap's (small speed boats with RPGs and Surface the air missiles,some with mines) When ships come through they sworm the ships to see how close they can get, When they feel threatened finally they turn. Its normal, i saw it every other day out there flying overhead the ships coming through. These guy's DID get closer than normal though. I think the US did everything rite. They warned them verbally, blew there horn and told them they are entering a danger zone. They were in international water, you MUST go through the straights to get into the arabian gulf, where most of our oil comes from, and they were out there protecting,not just OURS and the worlds oil supply that comes out of the arabian gulf. As well in support of OIF. You all need to get a little bit more educated before you start bashing on the U.S. Iran does alot of provocative ---- towards the US and ALOT Slides as to NOT go to war. There was alot that happened when i was out there, and alot of times, coalition would move aside so they wouldn't "hurt any feelings". We are trying to make a better name for ourselves over there as a country, the other day a US warship pulled out some Iranian fisherman that were thrown overboart out of there DHOW. They are allways doing this to help out, but of course the good things don't get to the media. Only the bad, then alot of people, including people on here make Ignorant posts like what you see when you read this thread. |

BTW, how is Qatar? I might do a 6 month detail over there in a bit with FRS for Warlock. Warlock is pretty cool, its all ESM jamming correct? Big atenna's on the back of the humvee's? They were taking alot of AW non acoustic people and sending them to iraq to do ESm type things in the humvee. |
