Default Internet lawyer type nogs, check in.....

Got a letter yesterday from my internet provider. It says that a court order was issued for them to give some people my information based on them wanting to sue my IP address. I have 10 days to oppose them giving out my info.
From what I gather, I was supposed to have defamed someone on a craigslist blog in a completely different state than where I live?
Called the lawyer from my internet provider and he said I have to send the letter of opposition to the court, but not to do it myself because then, the plaintiffs would have my info. The internet provider and thier letter says something about defamation on craigslist, and when the court is called (from the state these tools are trying to sue from), they say the case is about property damage. I don't have a clue wtf is going on.

Yes, I have a wireless open network, but I still can't put all this ---- together and figure out wtf I was supposed to have done, or even how I would do it if I wanted to.

I really don't want to pay a lawyer to send a letter for me, but even when the letter of opposition is sent, I guess the court can still get my info at a later date so someone can sue? Anyone had some ---- like this before?

I'm not worried about being found guilty of something I didn't do, I'm concerned about the run around and possible costs I will have to take on just to have this done. On top of the fact that I can't do anything on my own, because they don't know who I am. I'm just an IP address to them at this point. ----, I don't even know what my IP address is.

Anything real would have to have been served to you by an officer of the law.

I would call the courthouse where this document supposedly came from and just ask for information

If you don't oppose it, and it is fraud, then your internet provider will be liable for relinquishing your personal info to an unverified entity.

Yeah I'd take cray91s advice.

I'd get all the info from your ISP and the courthouse I could before moving forward.

Maybe your ISP or craigslist can provide records of when you supposedly accessed the site?

Encrypt your ---- man, it's easy and you don't have to worry about this.

Either way, I don't see how in the hell you can get sued when they can't prove who was behind the computer at the time, or if someone else was on your network, or if someone had some malicious software using your comp as a proxy, etc etc. What about innocent until proven guilty?

Re-reading the letter sent to me by my internet provider, they're letter says *I* have to send a letter to the court to oppose my info being given out. The court papers that came along with that letter said that the internet provider was ordered to tell the court wether I opposed or not. I think the provider is trying to shovle the court notification onto me. A rep from Craigslist was given a subpoena to give the court my IP address because of whatever I didn't do, and then the court sent the letter to my internet provider.

This ---- is stupid. How do you defame someone on craigslist, and why would I do it in a state that I don't even live in? There were about 5 IP addresses they were trying to sue, and mine came up as one.

Ok, so I just talked to the internet provider security blah blah guy, and this is a run around. In the letter from them to me the customer, they say that I have to file papers with the court to oppose my info being given out. They included in this mailing the papers from the court which read that they (the company) are ordered by the judge to report wether I want to oppose or not. Sounds like they're trying to get out of having anything to do with it, but now I've called an internet attorney who will probably tell me that I owe him stupid money for something I have nothing to do with.

I mean, it's not like I was shipping boxes of boxes of talkie-talkies to the middle east..
