interesting weekend

well this weekend i had my friend come over cause he needed me to figure out why his vtec wasnt engaging on his gsr. he had just put a turbo kit on his car and i had sold him my old p28 ecu that was chipped with the same tune me and CHRIS did a few months earlier. kid has the same setup as me. it was running great but for some reason vtec wasnt popping. so i had him come over, i swapped out ecus and dizzys and still wasnt popping. i start following the wires and some how on the engine harness, the vtec solienoid and pressure switch wires were swapped. so i swapped em back and went and took it for a rid. i get it on 5k comes vtec hits no CEL let off around 6k and here a funny as noise durning decel and then White smoke everywhere, car shuts off. I then pop the hood and a few coolant lines blew up. i push it back to my house and do a compression test. 75 175 0 175. was hoping to god it was a headgasket but upon removal, sleeve was cracked really bad. almost 3/4 the way down the cylinder wall and then a few other hairline cracks. Im really confused as to how this actually happened. cause it was only running 7psi. he said he had the motor in a hatch for a few months and it ran great, but then he also told me he wasnt running any fuel managment for a few weeks prior to him buying my ecu. so im ---- out of luck. i told him i have no money to get him a new motor but he can leave the car at my house and ill help/ do whatever i can to find him a motor/help pay for and get it running.
and josh do me a favor, keep your mouth shut until you figure out what actually happened. and no none of mine or my friends motors are stolen, and no this isnt gonna set my turbo project behind. anyway sorry for the long post. i just got pissed when i saw what josh was typing cause it was all bullshit and wanted to clear it up. also any suggestions as how the sleeve could have cracked like this?

Re: interesting weekend

So only one of the sleeves were cracked?

Re: interesting weekend

Man, cracked sleeve on a 7psi ripper? hot dam.
Did you perhaps forget to set timing again when you swapped dizzy's?
That sucks dude.

HMT-Admin 11-15-2005 01:57 AM

Re: interesting weekend

sounds like someone didnt set the timing..

This was my ls/vtec with a good fuel map, but way to much timing @ 12psi.

werd.

He even said that he was running without fuel management for a while before coming to you, so there's no telling what condition the motor was in already. He says it ran strong before, of course it did ::) I wouldn't pay him ----. Maybe feel bad and help install, but pay for it, no.

Re: interesting weekend

he was the one who ran the motor without fuel management for a little bit correct?
so he should be the paying for it, unless you are such a good friend you want to help him finacially.

there you go, definetly forgot to reset the timing after i swapped the dizzy. so im sure thast what caused the crack, but it was only 1 rip. the kid wasnt really pissed, but i just feel bad and want to help him get his car running cause i know if i was in his shoes id want the same thing. o well

sounds like the motor was on its last legs to begin with, personally, if the map was kosher, id tell him oh well.

did you have a wideband on it?

Re: interesting weekend

I think that if someone runs a boosted motor with no fuel management and asks you to help fix some problems, then the motor blows while "testing", it's the car owners bill. Everybody knows as soon as you install a turbo you're motor is in jeopardy of blowing everytime you get on it.

I guess it depends on who the guy is and how well you know him and if he would do the same for you. :-\ Otherwise I'd say he's ---- out of luck.

Sucks. Sorry to hear that man. :-\ Hope everything works out alright for you and it's rough since it's your buddy. That's why I'm hesistant on giving out information to people. Then again I always get the "10.5psi? No internals? It's going to blow" speech. What do I care? I'll rebuild. I own a D16 though. Not exactly high price GSR. Not to mention NO car. :-\ Sorry man, good luck with all that.

You dont owe him anything. Hes the guy who hurt the motor to begin with and asked your help. not like you were paid. But thats just me. I would help with install and actually set base timin :)

I love how you CAPITALIZED my name :D

Unless you or he did a compression test before you ripped on the motor...you dont know if it was half cracked already or not...you dont owe him ----. ---- happens...this isnt a cheap game we play.

Well if VTEC wasn't activating and he had spark issues then the tune you did wasn't exactly perfect after you fixed the VTEC activation problem and changed the timing. :-\

people need to read i hate repeating myself. vtec wastn activating cause the pressure and solienoid wires on the engine harness were swapped. the timing was offf cause i quickly threw my dizzy on there to see if his was bad. the tune was awesome.

No ------- ----. ::) If it was tuned BEFORE you fixed those problems then the tune is NOT awesome. :-\

From what I'm reading it sounds like you had it tuned with these problems, fixed them, adjusted the timing(advanced most likely?) and ripped on it. Is that correct?

At least your offering to help him, thats cool of you, but you shouldnt feel obligated to foot the bill, it sounds like the fuse was already lit for this distruction long before you ever got your hands dirty.

reread the first post chief.

i had sold him my old p28 ecu that was chipped with the same tune me and CHRIS did a few months earlier.
The tune was from jordans car

Dr.Boost 11-16-2005 04:11 PM

Re: interesting weekend

Ummm....so it was a "basemap" tune and not an actual "tune". Taking an "awesome tune" from "Car A" and swapping it into "Car B" isn't going to be such an "awesome tune" for Car B, no matter how much they are alike. Just like how everybody was all over the BBKA tune. It was tuned pretty good for his car and elevation, but not the next guys.

Regardless, if the distributor swap was what caused the motor to blow then I think he's at least a little responsible. :-\ Although if I were helping soemone out of the kindness of my heart and something happened to go wrong, then I might reconsider.
