Being a Physics major in a respectable university Physics program, I can definitely recognize the stuff these guys are talking about. Bring up a new idea in class and every jumps on you, professors especially. This is basically like calling cosmology a cult.. where a cult is just an unpopular religion by society's terms.
It's interesting stuff. Stuff they wouldn't dare bring up in class, out of fear of losing their job (even the tenured professors).

Nothing new here, bro. Anything, even something supposedly fresh and constantly re-inventing such as science, has periods of rapid growth + innovation interspersed with periods of stagnation.
Ideas and their adherents rise and fall all of the time, you just aren't taking a long enough view to see it as such. 50's, 60's, 70's sci fi was written by a lot of the scientists themselves and you find plenty of arguments for steady state, expanding, god, etc. These ideas, and the acceptability of playing with them, is not so far removed from human consciousness as you might think. In time, they may come around again for a re-evaluation.
