they should have used a diesel and a million gear transmission GRRRR SHHHH GR GR GRRRRRRRRR SHHHH GR GR GR GRRRRRRR SHHHHH.

speaking of which how do you drive those trucks with like 16 gears? it's like a second gearset behind the main one right?

1/2 scale ???

Looks nice except the interior. Could have done it a better.

That thing definitely needs a 12 valve Cummins pushing 60psi and a six speed.

Pretty sweet though

your dumb. but to answer your question you actually split each gear in half. so an eighteen speed would essentially be a 9 speed cut in half. To shift into the "high part" of a gear you pull or push a lever on the stick shift that activates an air cylinder that pushes a seperate part of the transmission into 2 gears. This seperate part of the transmission is what puts your gear into a "high" or a "low" ratio.

and your dumb also :)

think of two gear boxes

4 speed then a 3 speed.

13 speed =
SL......super low
Underdrive 1-4
Normal 1-4
Overdrive 1-4

thumb selector on top of shifter in L, go thru 1-2-3-4, then back to 1 and fliping the thumb selector to normal, 1-2-3-4, then back to 1 and overdrive 1-2-3-4.......

18 speed would be 6x3, normally L6 and N1 are the same, just saves wear and tear on the gear reduction gearbox, usually used on heavy duty trucks.

Nowadays most are 7 speeds since better injection setups, Big Orange is buying auotmatics for the newer drivers, easier to train, but limits the drivers from jumping ship after one year since they don't have and gear jamming exp.

oh yeah...........NO ------- SYNCHROS!!!!!!!

Now you wanna see a work of tranny art, look into a Road Ranger (sp) tranny. No clutch shifting but if you miss a gear you have to pull over and start from low again.

For once, double clutching has a purpose :)

Doesn't work that way either jackass

On an 18 speed tranny your gears are setup like this

R-1-3
L-2-4

Its basicly a 4 speed with a low gear.

On the shift knob you have a range splitter and a gear splitter.

To shift through the gears you go 1-2-3-4 like a normal transmission then you flip the range splitter down and shift back into 1st, which is now 5th. Then your in your high set of gears, and 2nd is 6th, 3rd is 7th, and 4th is 8th.

Then you have the gear spittler, in each gear you can flip the gear splitter and go a half gear up(or down if your already have the splitter in OD). So while your tranny is in any gear you can select between direct drive or overdrive with the gear splitter.

Pretty simple.... L is split so thats 2 sppeds. 1-8 gears split are 16 speeds.... that give you 18 speeds.

You are both wrong

"1-8 gears split are 16 speeds.... that give you 18 speeds."

Sorry, what math did you take?

explain range splitter and gear splitter.

Seem we are talking the same, just with differnt knowledge/terms.

There is also a low gear, you get 2 speeds out of that with the gear splitter. 16+2=18. Its not brain surgery.

Ok. The gear splitter is a small lever on the shifter. It allows you to select between Direct drive and Overdrive. You can flip the splitter in any gear and will give you a slightly taller gear than one you are in, without move the shift lever. You usually only use it when your loaded up heavy going up a hill, it helps if you can't quite hit 1st gear to 2nd or 3rd gear to 4th, etc.

Range splitter is a lever on the shifter that flips up and down. Its basicly your selector for the 2 speed rear end. It changes your 1-2-3-4 gears in a higher range. You shift through 1-2-3-4 then flip your range splitter then put the tranny back into 1st, but now its accually 5th gear. So in high range 1st gear is 5th, 2nd gear is 6th, 3rd gear is 7th, and 4th gear is 8th.

So when you shift through all the speeds (if you start in 1st, and dont use low) you only physically move the shift lever 8 times, but with the gear splitter you get another "gear" inbetween each shift.

Make Sense?

Driving big trucks can be entertaining. I drive a dump truck every once is a while, its pretty fun ripping through gears. Jake brakes are pretty tight too.

what if your in high 5th and you flip the gear splitter to go back to 6th with out using the range splitter kinda like if your in 13th and range split it to 8th to get the slightly large gear?

Yeah your right, but you can still get 2 gears in low with the gear splitter. If you could use the range splitter in low it would be a 20 speed instead of a 18.
