I went to bed a happy man last night

1 Attachment(s)
So about a year ago I bought an lS block, an ITR head and an LS tranny, anticipating to put it in my hatch. Well its been a long road but last night finally made me happy.
Attachment 26949
My build started out as High compression, the block I hads bought had JE 12.5-1 Compression pistons and shotpeened LS rods. Well I brought that to a machine shop to get it checked out and I was told I need to bore it .050 over... so that block was useless. I decided to try a different route and go b20 vtec, I brought that to a machine shop to have it checked out and they told me two of the headbolts were stripped and they wouldnt touch it since the threads started so deep in the block.so that block was out fo the question. I bought another bare LS block and it was solid, so I decided to go with that. But by now I had waited so long, I had changed my mind. NA is slow. so I bought eagles/Wisecos. Well I took it to the machine shop and they told me the crank was scarred. ----. I went back to the old block hoping that crank was good. 10 months later my engine is finally in my car. After a long road of sourcing random nuts and bolts I have everything I need. I didn't sleep a wink last night, Goal is to get it started today.

well you had to have them bore it, no complaints there. but i wouldnt feel like a car guy if i payed someone else to assemble my motor. that way you can say you built the car yourself not just pay some one to do it. like in import magazines where they say "john doe really knows how to build imports so he went to larry tompson from import builders to get it done right." well that means john doe dont know ---- if he took it somewhere else. but for $160 its a good deal but i would never do it

I've neverput rods/pistons into a motor myself... It scares the ---- out of me that my 800+ dollars worth of internals could be messed up if I ---- up. I put the head on, put the cams int etc.

Looks like its going to be a nice setup. What are the power goals for this?Good call on getting them to assemble it as well if you are not comfortable with doing it and dont have all the necassary tools then why bother.

Nothing wrong with having a machine shop build your block not everyone really wants to get in that deepth nor have the time

Notice most people who have the nicest cars have people help them ya cause most of them are college grads who make 80K+ a year

who really gives a ----. Enjoy the car and dont act like a tool=cool with me.

Whatever the fuel cut on a obdo b16 is, 110ish I think, on a sketchy caledon backroad trying not to get your knob bitten off in a car without the most luxurious ride quality aint easy lol

+1

I agree. I think it would be cool to do it yourself but you could seriously ---- up some expensive parts if you don't know what you are doing. Like me.

Re: I went to bed a happy man last night

Thats why you LEARN to do it, theres more than enough walkthrough on the internet. Everyones gotta start somewhere

THEN work up to BEING the guy that builds the motors and makes money from it

Seperates some real wrench turners from people with a fat wallet

Feels great to do ---- yourself

----, even if I'll do the job worse, I'll still do it myself

That logic makes sense with SOME things, but not when it comes to wanting a blueprinted and balanced engine...There are tools involved that not everyone has access to...

Make buddies, get access, LEARN. DO IT YOURSELF lol

Ive got a scale and a 4 1/2 angle grinder for the balancing lol

as far as blocks go

machine shops > at home throw togethers

plastigauge is not all powerful, and the ---- you see on the internet isn't everything you need to know.

HMTguy 05-25-2007 12:12 AM

Re: I went to bed a happy man last night

Actually plastiguage works very well

Re: I went to bed a happy man last night

but bearing clearance isn't the only thing you need to know or check when putting an engine together. I guess i should have stated that.

i had many local haters tell me to putit together myself.
1. I have never done it
2. I'm mechanically inclined, but I am not detail oriented...
3. I did not have access to a torque wrench with stretch on it.
