Crate training is always a good idea but I agree with Dr Boost big dogs like Danes shouldnt be kept in a crate all day. They're are places where you can take them to spend a day...like PetSmart. Most stores have doggie day care now. I know it sounds funny but its a blast to work in and they play all day long. Its good for the owners that have stuff to do and cant take the dog with them all the time.

I made a mistake with my boxer puppy and left him alone with my other dog while i ran to the gas station, was gone 10 minutes, came back and puppy was limping with a dislocated shoulder thanks to my other dog, so i sort of learned the hard way.
I can't see how buying a dog and throwing him in a cage for 60% of the day could be justified. Dogs need to run around and play and move around. They need regular exercise and throwing them in a cage for most of the day isn't going to help.

As soon as my dog was old enough to figure out eating couches is a bad thing, I stopped making him sleep in the cage. He hardly ever chews ---- up anymore and if he does it's only garbage anyways.

In other words, MOST dogs need a fenced in yard...

Well, not just that. It gets to be 120-130* out here. I can't see leaving a dog outside all day in this heat to die all summer. It gets to be ~0* other places and I can't see leaving your dog out there to freeze all winter. Yeah, you can give them blankets and shade or whatever, but still. Imagine your *** being stuck outside all day everyday during weather like that.

yea it depends on the dog and where you live, like i leave my dogs in their cages when i am at work because i tried leaving them out for while and that ---- stopped real quick when i came home to couch cushions ripped apart in the middle of the floor and the trashcan toppled over with crap strewn all over the living room, etc. not to mention the turds.... anyway, they don't sleep in there at night and get plenty of excercise after i get home, in fact i have to spend a few hours outside a day with them or they don't ever want to calm down, lol.

but then again they are both still puppies.

my house has a huge yard, but the sucky part is i would have to get a taller fence. the summers here aren to bad to leave them out side, and durn the winter i can biuild a nice sized area donw in my basement that ican put them if i have to leave them "home alone". the basement dosent get too cold during the winter.
