I sold my Civic!

And then it blew up on the kid! :(

so what do you guys think about this

Sold it to him, he took off down the highway... about 10 minutes later I get a call "dan the car died"

"what happened?"

"it kind of slowed down... bucked then stopped running"

so I go to find him... turns out he was like 20 miles away in about 10 minutes time :o

So what are my obligations to him.

I ended up paying for his car to get towed to the local garage, but we gotta wait til Monday to talk to the mechanic...

And yes I did warn him there was a lower end ticking noise... have it on paper and all

So what do you guys think

Re: I sold my Civic!

did you state it anywhere that it's sold as is

HondaTuner 08-04-2006 08:10 PM

Re: I sold my Civic!

yes.

Re: I sold my Civic!

Then you should be fine. I mean, it sucks for the kid, but the car was sold as is, you both knew there was a problem with the bottom end. This one's pretty much up to your morals, cus i dont think your legally obligated to do anything.

Re: I sold my Civic!

he must be going 100+ in order to travel 20 miles in 10 minutes :l and for what i know the d15b7 doesn`t go up to 100 that easily :l he must be flooring it the whole time

tell him straight out that if he push it like that there`s nothing you could have done to save the car. pay for the tow if you wanted to and walk away. but hopefully you did state the car is being sold as-is on ur bill of sales.

BTW you shouldn`t even pay for the tow at the first place

Re: I sold my Civic!

Then there is no problem if you stated that its sold as is...you said 20 miles in 10 minutes? jesus christ, 2 miles a minute is pretty fast, I doubt he was taking it easy on the car. I guess if this happened to me I would offer to fix it at his cost in parts.
Still untill any decisions are made find out what happened exactly.

Which means he was going about 120mph. It's his fault.

AS IS....NO WARRENTIES :y

Re: I sold my Civic!

if the bottom end is smoked or about ready to be smoked, he should have known.

Xgenturbo 08-04-2006 08:28 PM

Re: I sold my Civic!

120mph = 193km, holly ----! :o he was at a constant 120 the whole way for 10 minutes, no wonder his car blew up.

HondaTuner 08-04-2006 08:31 PM

Re: I sold my Civic!

IIRC it was around 10 minutes.

jinxy 08-04-2006 08:33 PM

what does IIRC mean?

if i remember correctly.

Re: I sold my Civic!

If you were honest and forthcomming about the problems then it is just a bad timing issue. I think you did enough by paying for the tow. It was a good jesture, but you are not obligated to do anything.

HMTguy 08-04-2006 08:38 PM

Re: I sold my Civic!

I love selling things as is. You can tell someone that your car runs perfect and has never given you any problems. Sold as is. (It really had a blown headgasket, no radiator, and fried ringlands on every piston)

I don't do it to that extent, nor have I scammed anybody like that, but if it can cover someone who does that, it makes me feel safe as a seller O0

Re: I sold my Civic!

ur not legally obligated to do ----..

but morally.. on the otherhand..

but this ofcourse depends on how much you sold the car for..

if he got it for a jew price id be like piss off, but if you sold it for double what it was worth, i would feel like ---- :l

i sold my s10 with a leaking tranny fluid line and i made damn well ------- sure i implanted it in the buyers ------- brain not to go over 40mph not to floor the ---- out of it not to drive more than 5 miles at a time before stopping to check fluid levels, made sure to tell em to have the fucker fixed a.s.a.p and even after he left my house i called him up and made sure that he stopped the car and checked the fluid :6

he got it fixed at his mechanic and just like i told em the car runs like a champ O0 he took it down to kentucky and back up to michigan 3 trips.. then went from kentucky to georgia, then on to florida, then back up to michigan :6

he wanted to give me more money.. because he told me the truck was worth alot more then he bought it for, i denied.. lol

i have to admit tho.. if his tranny blew on him even if it was his failt i prolly would have pussied out and refunded him half the money :-\

This is copy and pasted from when I sold my Red turbo EK to my neighbor.

I, David Callahan, agree to sell a USED 1996 Honda Civic CX VIN number 2HGEJ6327TH115232 to ________________________ in AS-IS condition. This vehicle is heavily modified and there is no implied warranty what so ever. By signing this, the buyer fully understands the terms of sale stated above.

Like the others said, you aren't legally responsible for crap, and it was pretty damn nice of you to pay for the tow.

I would find out a more accurate idea of the distance and time so you could get an accurate idea of how fast he was going, and I'd tell the kid. Sounds to me like he was excited about his new toy, ran the ---- out of it knowing that it had a problem, and blew it up.

His fault, he probably learned a lesson.

Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.

Re: I sold my Civic!

I got a couple hundred less than what KBB tells me a car in my condition is worth...$400 less in fact.

He even came over before and said the ticking "wasnt as bad as [he] thought"

today I started the car to make sure all was good, idled perfect. still had that God-awful noise but that wasnt until 3k or so, but it idled smooth. He came to pick up the car and I checked the fluids and ---- just to make sure everything was good.

At one point he said (after I went to go see him after the car broke down) "Dan I want the car but I don't want the car like this." ... My mom is trying to push me into giving him a couple hundred back... I volunteered to go to the junkyard and find him a good running engine, have it pulled and take it to the mechanic to throw in... not with my money though. But I figured it'd save him some dough.

buk9tp 08-04-2006 08:46 PM

Re: I sold my Civic!

how much did you sell it for..

kbb should have been fair condition...

SpankedYA! 08-04-2006 08:46 PM

Re: I sold my Civic!

Dan, the bottom line is that you didn't knowingly sell a gernade. Is he a friend? If not then its his problem....though God may Smite you.

$1800. but kbb = $2200, even with "engine needing replacement"

Yeah if I had known it was going to blow 10 miles down the road (which I don't think it was from normal driving) I wouldn't have sold it to anyone; i wasn't out to screw the kid over.

Re: I sold my Civic!

i would just give him 300 back minus the cost of towing and call it a day :-\

I was thinking of that.

That's more than generous on your part.

Re: I sold my Civic!

5 MINUTES OR 5 MILES WHICH EVER COMES FIRST!!!! you definatly dont have any legal ---- to worry about since car was sold in as-is condition if the kid took it out and blistered the ---- out of knowing something was wrong thats his own ------- fault and you shouldnt feel obligated to do anything for him but i do undestand you feel obligated in some way but tell him you will fix it for his cost in parts and pay you for your labor dending on what went wrong.

MORELS ARE A BITCH AREN'T THEY!!!

Re: I sold my Civic!

Haha I had somthing like this happen to me when I got my hatch. I traded the kid my running 93 geo metro for his broken 91 hatch (suposed bad clutch) and a 92ish ford probe that was wreched. Me and my friend Went and picked up the hatch first and a week later picked up the probe. We get there and the kids like I broke your car allredy. I was like wtf the motor was just rebuilt. He said he had like 5 people in that tiny ass car and was flying down the highway and it sounded like someone filled the engine with marbles and then started laughing his ass off :S I asked if he put any oil in it cause the litle 3 bangers like to use some on highway runs and he said no. Me and my friend just loaded up the probe and left. I sold the probe to a friend for $200 I had $100 in fuel to go get the cars and $75 in the metro I traded so my 91 atd cost me -$25 lol. The best part of all this was that the hatch suposedly had a bad clutch but all i had to do was tighten the adjustment nut lol.

cliffs: Traded a metro I had $75 into for a perfictly running 91 std and a wreched probe. Sold probe for $200 so cost for hatch = -$25. Kid blew up metro in 1 night.

Re: I sold my Civic!

I sold my civic. I wrote on there 'as-is' in the bill of sale. The kid (junior in high school) had it for two weeks and blew it up 'driving normally'... whcih he eventually admitted to driving it 'like a boosted car' = beating the ---- out of it. Put a rod through the block. He called me and wanted his money back, which I was not about to buy a broken car back from him.

He kept the car, no legal action or anything happened to me, not that it could have happened.

No matter how shady it seems, if you told him everything and it blows up on him (whether the first day or the second or a year from the sale) you told him exactly what it was and that is a chance you take buying a used car (aka 'someone else's headaches')

Keep the money and don't buy it back. It is not your fault.

Re: I sold my Civic!

I'd feel bad for the guy too, I know how you're feeling, but he bought something with a known engine problem.

Well, what was he expecting?

buk9tp 08-05-2006 02:03 AM

Re: I sold my Civic!

how much did you stress the fact that the car has a fucked engine?

now that i think about it.. if he drops in a engine for 700 bucks.. and he paid 1800 for the car.. so thats 2500 for a running civic sedan?

you couldnt even find one for 2500 :)

tell him that.. and dont give him ---- ;)

also stress the fact that he's a retard :P

Re: I sold my Civic!

---- it, you paid ffor towing. That's more than enough sympathy.

SkunT 08-05-2006 08:53 AM

Re: I sold my Civic!

remeber when this ---- happened to me.
I ended up payin half of the estimate.

i was kinda forced to. i would have told him its his car, he bought it as-is, he hopped in it and hauled ass after it sat for months :1
I would tell him, you paid for the towing, the rest is on him.
