The D16Y oil pump is the only structural problem with the Y8.

The timing issue doesn't exist. It takes just as much work to set the timing and tune a Y8 as it does a Z6. The problem is people don't understand how to use a timing light, or expect an ignition map off a Z6 or a LS6 Corvette to plug and play with their Y8.

not everybody wants to have to tune their car on a dyno with a stethescpoe to get the timign right. the p28 maps are already there to use with the z6 head. i had a big enough headache with my old y8 to not want to use one again. guess it's just a personal preferance.

The Y8 maps are out there now, you just have to look for them in one of the moderator's bin depositories. :P

oh ok, last time i was looking you were pretty much telling everybody to quite askign you and that you were done with it. good to know you shared your research and hard work with the normal people. kinda wish i still had my old car so i could try them out.

Sorry if you got screwed on that deal, but I for a week there I averaged ten messages per hour from people who kept asking me if they *really* needed timing lights, etc. And, really, it's not terribly hard to understand that you have to synch ignition maps to ignition timing. SOHC_MShue and ElSpool and others have been saying the Y8 doesn't like timing for *years*.

kinda of ironic because i believe i tuned my Y8 with crome using a basemap i got from you :P haha

Y8 not liking timing? Nonsense, i ran the afc hack at 8 lbs with no ignition retardation for months :1

Go try that with a T3/T04E and shoot for 300. Hell, ---- 300, try breaking 200. Yanking timing on the 10 psi scalar from 12 degrees to 7 degrees made 27 whp on a heat soaked engine.

that sucks, my car never ran as good as i thought it could. it ran real good down low but once you got around 8-10 psi it would feel like it was being held back and i knew it was a timing issue because of the maps. me and a group of other y8 owners on pgmfi.org were tryign to figure it out before JD decided to bust it wide open. we were never really able to get it perfect but we had it so it was pretty close.

If you look at the Y8 combustion chamber matched with the Y8 pistons, you'll see that it has very nice quench areas. The flame front propagates very quickly in this engine. Too much timing on this motor is very easy.

I spun a rod bearing on my Y8 from running to much timing. I took over a year, but that made it more evident as to what was going on. I was only pushing maybe 150whp, but most of the top rod bearings were pretty worn from over advanced ignition timing.

JD seams to have done nice work with the Y8. I'd take his advice like the bible.

Using Vitara's with this head "should" get rid of all that quench, so more timing "should" be possible. JD, what pistons combos have you tried on the dyno with this head?
