I need other thoughts before I buy this b18?

my buddy has a 92 ls b18, grey plug distrib, he thinks it has 140,xxx on it, could be 180,xxx I don't know. It comes with trans, ecu, no cam gears. he wants $400 obo. theres a LOT of thick carbon build on the exhust ports. I just want the block for an ls/vtec. I am going to bulid the block up. I was just wondering is this engine to beat to buy. I don't wanna buy it than find out its junk. any thing I should look out for? thanks for the help Ray

carbon can be removed by sandblaster and/or hot tanking. Most machine shops can do it. also, you should be able to get most of it w/ simple green and some engine degreaser.

if it's still in the car do a comp test. remember, u can sell the head and IM if u plan on going ls/v

If you are planning on just using the block and you're building it up anyway, I would say you're probably good unless there's a cracked sleeve or something. Yeah, and you can always sell the head to get some of your money back.

I'd get it. But if I could find just the short block for cheaper I would probably try to save some money in buying the head and other stuff I don't need.

I think I will offer him $300 for his set up, than I can sell the head, and ecu, and I still have the ls tranny. thanks for the input. CRX88si you have ls/vtec? I wanna turbo this set up, and I wanna put new pistons and rods, while the block is apart. The only thing that has worried is I keep hearing about piston valve slap, how can I avoid this?

To avoid valve interference, there is a couple of things to do: Use a die grinder on the piston crow and make the size of the valve reliefs larger to accomodate the VTEC sized valves (i've seen it done on a CRVtec). Another option is to use stock cam gears, the adjustable ones can cause probs with anything above 4degrees +/- i do believe.

If you are planning on doing pistons and rods, just get pistons meant for LS/vtec hybrids

scroll down till you see the "VTEC Conversions" chart...
