I need a mechanic....

Okay, im a complete dumbass when it comes to cars. I never learnt anything about them so im 100% ignorant on how to repair them. My Slave cylinder went on my 94 Integra and i need to pay $45 for a tow and somewhere in the $225-250 range for a new slave cylinder and the repair. >:( That seems like a lot of money for a $40 part.....so if any of you are in NJ and want to pick up some extra money doing repairs now and then contact me via email Sta1173@rcn.com or AIM: Billab2ong...i dont really want to hear "learn how to do it yourself". i appreciate the fact that some people know how to do stuff i dont know how to do and im willing to pay for those services....i just dont like paying the super high prices of going through a shop...rather give the money to someone on this site.

the best thing that you could do is buy a shop manual. this is a really easy repair and it doesnt take very long, you should just read about it, and then decide what you want to do

*nods head*, you could spend 20 bucks on a manual and 50 bucks on the part, you'd have it done in an hour for 70 bucks. in your own words, yes you are "ignorant" :-[

Re:I need a mechanic....

but if i ---- it up and blow my transmission...thats a $400 mistake and a transmission isnt a 1 hour job....so all in all sometimes i think its better to pay and get it done correctly...

dude, you won't mess it up i promise. get a manual and just look at and see how simple it is. please don't take to a mechanic for this, if anything, when you get it off and are confused, you can just ask questions here (i don't think you'll have any though)

Re:I need a mechanic....

this slave cylinder can't screw up the tranny. its for the clutch pedal assisst. just swap the part, and start the car. in neutral pump the clutch like 5 times and check for leaks.. thats all.

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :'(

After fixing a bunch of crap ass installs and stupid mechanic mistakes....I will NEVER NEVER take my car to a shop....unless its to dyno tune. I only trust me to work on my car....

Think thats extreme I should show you what they did on wiring in my friend's civic...he paid a mint to have it done, then bought me a 6 pack to fix it with a soldering iron

Re:I need a mechanic....

so i just got off the phone with the mechanic and it was $45 for the tow. The diagnosis was that my clutch is still in good shape but my master/slave cylinder system was actually bleeding hydrolics from the firewall down the interior of my car and on my carpet :(. So they are replacing both, draining the hydrolics, and refilling the lines and charging me $200-225. So its gonna be about $250ish including the tow..... :'(

projekteg 11-11-2003 01:08 PM

Re:I need a mechanic....

replacing both what? the slave cylinder and the carpet? or are they just telling you that and cleanin up your slave cylinder and replacing the busted line ;)

miss-piggy 11-11-2003 01:42 PM

Re:I need a mechanic....

probably just fixing the busted line and telling me they replaced the cylinder....but who knows...anyway for me to check so i can sue them in small claims court if i notice the part isnt new??

damn i hate not knowing anything about cars... >:( >:( >:( >:(

Okay...so i found my chiltons...and this is why i didnt want to fix this part...

1) Locate the slave cylinder....1st ------- step and im lost....

Re:I need a mechanic....

well, i guess if it looks brand new :P i don't know, get some kind of receipt for just the part itself (chances are they, don't have one in stock and had to buy it or order it, therefore, they would have their receipt) i don't know? if it's a good clean shop with a reputable name, you prolly don't have to worry about it.

Re:I need a mechanic....

if they havn't done it already, go in there with a black marker, and mark your slave cylinder if it comes out of the shop with the mark still there they didn't change it.

Re:I need a mechanic....

Ask for the old parts.

This is why you should have done this yourself. It's as easy as changing your oil. You do know how to change your oil, right? :-\

I will NEVER take my car to a shop. If I can't fix it, it won't get fixed. My uncle is a mechanic and I won't even trust him to work on my vehicles. He has never touched my Civic. 8)

Re:I need a mechanic....

the thing that scares me about shops is that they have such a broad, general knowledge of cars. We took my friends MR2 for an oil change cause you got a free car wash by doing it (and it was like 12.99) and i watched the guy take of the front skid plate, scratch his head cause he couldn't find the engine, call like 6 guys over there to help him, and didn't get it untill i walked up and pointed it out to him that it's a mid engine car.

my point is, I would trust a shop that speciallizes in my car. for the same reason why I trust myself with my car, I know it inside and out. If I owned a dsm, ---- eah i'd take it to roadrace engineering, or if I owned a skyline (and lived in japan) ---- yeah i'd take it to Matchless crowd racing. Even more specialized then that, if I owned an NA B-series honda, ---- yeah i'd take it to Inline four. But am i going to take my pride and joy to jiffy lube where they work on toyota camrys and hyundais all day? ---- NO.

I take my ---- to PepBoys to get all of my APC parts and stickers installed. They really know how to put on stickers to get the most HP per square inch. ::)

Re:I need a mechanic....

i should have done it myself even though i dont know where the slave cylinder is ??? Another problem was the hydrolic line was leaking...so i could have swapped the slave cylinder and still had problems w/ the hydrolic lines...so all in all...if i had someone that was knowledgable and they showed me...i would do it...but me going out and just putzing around in my car engine not knowing anything about cars and engines....i think it sounds like a bad idea....

Re:I need a mechanic....

Do you plan on doing a turbo setup on your car yourself? Sounds like you are very uncomfortable working on your car, you should have taking this experience into your own hands, rather than paying someone to do it.. Every little bit helps.

What's wrong with Hyundai?

BTW, I am a Hyundai tech, and thanks to jiffy lube, I've replace probablu 20 oil pans this year.

Jeff, you know all about the shitty Kia/Hyundai oil pans :-)

So you are saying that your clutch master cyl blew the seal INSIDE the car? Other wise there is really no other reason it should be inside...

And last time i checked the slave cyl is located on the front of hydro trannys. Yes there are steel lines running across the firewall bat thats a hella hole to soak the carpet. I think yer about to be taken..... Also HOW did he check your clutch to be sure it was ok?
