i finalyy got my first car.
 

well, it seems that i have gotten my first car, and boy do i love it. what is it? well, its an 86 rx7. yes rx7. 5 speed. its in almost perfect working order. clean title. baught at aouction for 950 and had 177000 miles on it. lets just say the drive home was fun. i hate it when it tells me to shift up or shift down. damnit!! lol. soon to be boosted. ill post pics.

I got my first car back in october, and now I'm getting a late 80's mustang to work on. I'm glad I got something to work on, but would've rather had a crx or hatch. Just thought I'd share.

Your better off doing a turbo II swap in stead of boosting a N/A 13B. and due to that fact it has 177,000 on it.

I have been working with with them for a while sicnce i was about 11. boost it it will blow. and for the same price it whould take to boost it you can get a whole swap.

Ya I've heard that as well about the Non-turbo 13b's that they are really not setup to handle boost at all, especially with that milage, you may want to take nikoniko's advice, a turboII swap is the way to go.

damnit. not even allot of boost. probobly a little. like maybee not even allot, but i heard from people that just slapping some boltons will net me some in the ass power. o well. time to see if itb's will work. hopefully it wount be too freakin loud. also, is it normal to look under the hood, and see plugs that dont go to anything? basically what i am saying is it looks like ---- was plugged in, but was taken out, and i just have plugs. i dont know.

what kind of motor oil do i put in it? i read under the hood but it sayd tempt for - numbers and i got conused, so i just put in 10w-40. i think it was some penzoil crap. ill change teh oil soon enough.

damnit.

also, i dont think its gonna cost me as much as a TII because this is hmt, and ill get the crap done myself. ill probobly end up getting my bros wrx turbo and just leaving it with that. man. this sux.

does he shift at like 9k daily? my bro had an 89 and it only beeped at red line. now his 93TT does beep at all that i know of.

no, it beeps at a certain rpm, not even redline. it also says up shift at like 5 grand and the thing starts beeping at like 7 grand.

if you want boost... swap a TII motor in it.. the Na rotards wont take much boost .. especially at 177K.... no offense.. but expect to be putting a new motor in that car in the near future ( when you do you'll definately want to install a fuel pump cutoff switch).. if you want to prolong the life.. you can do the ATF treatment to it. that gets rid of some of the carbon buildup in the motor...as far as making it fast NA.... take everything off the motor. get rid of the PS,AC, get a header and run a (atleast) 2.5 inch exhaust all the way back.. get a new clutch...advance the ---- outta the timing..lsd's can be found fairly cheaply ( you may even have one now.. what model is it? gxl... base??).. if you dont have 5 lug brakes... id reccomend a 5 lug swap on it. the 5 lug factory brakes have 4 piston calipers on the front ( ie: peel your face off the dash braking power) etc. pull the carpeting plastic etc out the back... if it has seats back there pull them out blah blah.....get rid of the OMP and run premix etc..... i have a friend that did all this and ran a 14.6 in a peg legged NA stock port rx7. they can be moderately fast for little to no $$. and they handle amazingly.

as far as oil... it dpends on where you live.... in GA here my buds run 20-50 in the summertime.. and 10-30 in the winter.

dude, your a life saver.yes its the 5 lug version with 4 wheel disc breaks, its a gxl i think, and it has no reer seat. its the two seater version withought the sunroof. as far as i can tell, the damn thing is in perf3ect mechanichal condition. i mean really. all that is new is too long to list. its amazing. i might take the airconditioning out, but not the power steering. i want to keep that, since i am a weak girly man.

also, does that big thing ( mas ) need to be there? can it be taken out? "the OMP and run premix" enlighten me a little, because i fail to know what the hell that his.


also, i would also like to convert it to dual throtle bodies.

ok congrads on having one beastly heavy pig of an rx7. well its not THAT bad lol.. good news is you have the good brakes and you MAY have an LSD stock.( jack the ass end up... turn one wheel.. if both wheels spin you have an lsd...if not youre peg leggin it)

-"perfect mechanical condition" yeah well.. its a high mileage rotard. it isnt a question of if it'll explode... its more like... today or tomorrow.. or next week.. or whatever.. it will. for some peace of mind you might want to pour some marvel mystery oil in the gas and some in the motor..

i'd ditch the PS before i ditched the AC... trust me.. when you lose that power steering you feel SOOO much more of whats goin on with the car. and the ratio is still so that its not very difficult to drive the car.. its about like a civic/crx w/ manual steering.. not bad at all. ( ditching your PS and AC also gives you a tremendous gain in throttle resoonse)

- yes the MAF sensor has to be there.. the car will run like -------/ not run at all withough it... stick a cheap cone filter on the MAF sensor and go with it

- OMP = oil metering pump. a rotary engine uses this pump to inject motor oil into the combustion chamber to lubricate/ seal the combustion chamber( yes this means that all rotarys burn oil). if you eliminate the omp you have to mix high grade 2 cycle oil in with your gas. if memory serves right the ratio is 1oz oil/ gallon of gas. an advantage to this is better lubrication and a cleaner burning mixture ( ie less carbon deposits.. and carbon is the enemy of a rotard motor)

- dont waste your time on dual throttle bodies... if you want to make some power switch to a carb setup and get rid of the fuel injection all the way, get a big SP and a full exhaust. ( this is of course only applicable to a NA motor)

also the first "pay mod" ( ie not free ---- like weight reduction) i would look at is an exhaust... a stock rx7 has like 45 cats on it and some restrictive ass piping....

they are.. aside from the 1985 gsl-se.. its a FI 13B.... but his car is a 2nd gen.

good deal man. i was thinkin about porting the piping used for the filter, since it is weirdly tiney, and i will get a new full exhaust. also, what did you mean by putting opil in the gas and some in the motor? what does this do? is it a special oil?? lol. dude, you are the coolest, but i didnt think that having a rotard car with 177000 miles was that bad. its pretty bad, but not fucke it its dead bad. ---- man. do you think i should get a rebuild kit? i was also thinkin about switiching rotors form an 88 since their lighter and higher compression. i know i know i would have to get it balanced and ----, but o well. also, i was thinking about takin that stupid fan off and putting an electrical one on the radiator. lol. o well. thnx for your help man. hopefully it will last me a good while befor it becomes complete ---- motor. that pisses me off.

MMO.. marvel mystery oil.. can be had at walmart... its actually a detergent more than an oil.... its good ----.. it dissolves carbon. rotary motors have carbon issues. the OMP makes the motor burn oil which results in carbon deposits.. well when a chunk of that built up carbon decides to let loose it gets slung around in the motor and usually fucks an apex seal

- having one isnt THAT bad lol.. i'm mostly giving you ---- man but just so you know.. i wouldnt expect the motor to last THAT much longer.. i've heard of then going 200K but not much over that


as far as getting a rebuilt kit... eh i wouldnt rebuild it myself.

- if you decide to switch rotors you WILL have to buy a rebuild kit. whenever you take apart the housings you break teh coolant seals. pretty much any time you take open a rotary you have to atleast replace the coolant and oil seals. and you shouldnt have to have anything balanced

- yeah i forgot an E fan. the ones from a fiero seem to be popular.. but any OEM E fan from any car will work in theory. get one. the clutch fan puts a load on the motor

- dont get pissed... if it pops... but another motor in it... thats how it goes.

fyi a GOOD rebuild isnt cheap

heh, i drove it today, and it seemed pretty smooth, but not too fast. i guess ill have to unbolt most of the stuff. and get an oil change, and ----. lol. and someother fluid changes.

oh it'll be smooth.. rotarys are increbidly smooth.. and i think they sound awesome with a decent exhaust.. they have a .. eh i dunno .. they just sound like a rotary.. and if you get rid of all the emissions ---- they develop a "rotary skip" which is kinda neat almost... it lopes a little at an idle...

oh and did you know that the top of your third gear .. depending on your rear end ratio is about 100mph and the top of fourth is right at 150....also.. they have this thing calles a DTSS bushing that gives at high speed cornering and allows the rear end to "steer" so dont freak when you feel the rear of the car kick to the side a little during spirited driving :P ;D have fun and get some good tires.. and dont kill yourself

lol, yeash, the reer end felt like it lost some grip. lol. i punched it one time, with a bunch of kids at school, i squeeled like for like 5 secconds and everyonbe looked. also, my friend was fallowing me. and someone cut him off. so i turned a left onto a long street. and he hasd to ait. by the time he turned onto the street, i was gone. he wondered if it was even me. damn i love this car dude.

and kain.. the " coming loose" i'm referring to isnt what you felt probably... you probaly just lost traction.... what i;m talking about is at high speed cornering ( think... over 100mph) the tires dont lose grip... but the ass end of the car actually shifts.... its a weird feeling.. kinda un setteling

I'm not too sure I would be thrilled with the idea of my rear end shifting like that. I've had it happen before, but it wasn't supposed to, and it wasn't too pretty. :(

nah its not cool....you can actually buy solid metal pieces to replace teh dtss bushings....so the ass of the car doesnt shift... that's what id do... casue i've been in one.. and taking a long sweeper at 120 and having the ass of the car wiggle will definately scare you!

well, when its moving slow ( below 2mph ) i can, but other than that, no. so i just leave it in 2nd sometimes.


i pulled my firs 2 gear squeel today. i mashed 1st, squeeled, and mashed seccond ( verry hard to shift into seccond. i actually have to force it ) and they lit up again. i was happy.

This is normal for any car and it has nothing to do with close gearing. Your syncros are going through hell when you try to downshift into first like that(does first even have a syncro on that car?). Give it some gas before you shift to help the gear catch up. Have you driven a manual before?

yeah go easy on that tranny till you get good... the synchros in that thing will eat ---- and die. if its hard going into second double clutch that ---- and go easy on it..... but yeah.. my friends car with everything removes and a gigantic ass street port would get sideways in 3rd gear ;D

yeah. this is the first time i ever really drove a manual. i just got in the car and somehow knew how to drive it. it was cool.

i was reading on a websight that the lower the octane fuel you put in it, the better. but only for an n/a. for a trubo, the octane rule applies. i was just wondering about that befor i actually put lower octane in my car.
