How to - Valve cover painting **pics**

I got really tired of seeing my valve cover. It was orange and it was peeling off. Because the guy who painted it didn't take off the old paint, it was coming through.

I found this write-up on H-T and this is what I used for my directions.
http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=434053&page=1

First I took the valve cover off and took off all the paint. Use paint stripper. That ---- works goood.. It took me about 5 times of the paint remover to get the 2 layers of paint off. MAKE SURE TO GET IT ALL OFF. just because you're painting over it doesnt mean it won't show through.

After you've gotten all the paint off, you need to tape off the holes. I used blue painter's masking tape and it worked great.

Put chapstick on the honda logo and lettering. Taping it off would be a bitch. I just left it and dremeled it off in the end. It didn't turn out that great that way. Just do the chapstick. It's the best way.

Now comes the fun part, painting. I used Rust-oleum HIGH HEAT spray paint... It's a spiffy flat black. I didn't want it to be glossy.

Paint it all evenly and make sure to leave enough time for the last coat to dry before you put on another. I put on 3 coats and that turned out pretty good. If you're patient I'd put on 4.

Leave it to dry for a couple hours and then put it on. Don't over-torque your valve cover bolts, they're only supposed to be at like 7 ft. lbs.

Here are the pics.

Here is how it looked when I first got it... Since then the condition had gone down hill and the black was showing through all over.

Here's when it was all taped off and drying.

And the final product. I also painted my breather filter because metallic blue just wasn't doing it for me.

if anyone needs a write up to paint a valve cover, they are an idiot.

everyone knows:

paint and dirt dont mix
and whatever they dont want to paint or dont want to scrape off later, to mask that ---- off.

pretty simple, IMO, or am i smarter than the average painter. ???

you did do a good job painting the thing though. :P

Instead of painting your valve cover you should just replace the entire head and find a factory valve cover thats not screwed up ;)

I'm sure the D15b6 w/ a header is a mad fury of hell ;D
