Outlets don't have amps

Holy crap dude, whenever I see your posts I think of that hillbilly that drove that Camaro, you all know the one I'm taking about.

"Usually when I drive like this, my dad hits me in the head with a shovel. Since he's not here, I'll do it myself"

Amperage has to do with the type of fuse that's on the circuit. Go downstairs to your fuse box and look ::)

Re: how to tell the ams on a outlet

If you have a 120 volt outlet and the both blades are vertical that is 15 amp. if one is vertical and the other is horizontal or both than is 20 amp. Be careful because 220 vertical and horizontal looks the same but the vertical blade is on the other side.

if your running a 20 amp breaker, then that means it cannot exceed 20 amps. use a "fluke" multimeter to check the amperage.

You actually need a clamp on amp meter. Most multimeters won't give you amps. And I prefer Speary meters.

I love how everyone calls them Fluke meters, and amperage is a load measurement sticking a multimeter in a socket won't tell you ----.

Re: how to tell the ams on a outlet

voltage and amp capacity is printed on the recp. just beacuse the breaker in the panel reads 20amp you may not have a 20a circut you need to look at conducter size for a 20a circut it should be #12 awg.
now if your looking for an amp reading your going to need an amp meter. which means you need to pull the panel cover off, then find out what circut it is if its 240volt it will be a 2 pole breaker. there is 2 conductors (wires} you need to take a reading on both of them one at a time.

or..just listen to csaddict..considering ALL outlets that he stated look just like he said..i'm guessing he is or has been an electrictian? or just a smart dude
Why do you need to know what amprage you can handle anyways?

easiest way to tell..............find the breaker!!!!!!!!

There is some really bad advice in this thread, don't kill your self or blow up your meter

Re: how to tell the ams on a outlet

Look at the welder and see what the max amp draw is.

Re: how to tell the ams on a outlet

i am an electrican myself been doing it for 10yrs just look at the name plate on the welder first find how many amps it draws and what voltage or you can simply look at the plug on the welder somtimes its on there, if your welder draws more than 20amps.
my suggestion is to have an electrican install a new circut for you . if your amperage doesnt exceed 80% of your 20 amp circut your good to go.
