HOW TO: Shunt for your multimeter
 

any of you who use a digital volt ohm meter(multimeter) Know how expensive inductive leeds can be, so a cheap alternative is to make a shunt. Shunts allow you to check amps that normally pop your fuse in your multimeter or make it give up the ghost. A shunt is nothing more than a connection between two points in a circuit that forms an alternate path for a portion of the current. Your dvom will form the alternate low voltage path(millivolt) and youll be reading the voltage drop across this tool.Your dvoms millivolt scale (mv) reading will then be equal to the current of the circuit in AMPS. If you measure right. Remember to put this in series with whatever circuit you are testing.

Youll need:
1foot of 10 or 12 ga fusible link.--5$ a foot at most places
gator terminal ends.-radio shack 3$ for nice size ones
solder gun &60/40 rosin core solder
OK you got the fusable link you need to strip the ends and solder the link to your gator clips.Make sure its attached good to both clips or the reading on yourmultimeter will be off.Now slit two spots into the links insulation without hitting the wires. Keep it about an inch or two from the gator clip and make sure they are 6 and 5/8 apart or it wont read right.

I push my leeds of my dvom through the wire,you can solder on wire to gator clips but dont make the wire to long or it will effect your reading. Make sure you check the ressistance in it before use.

whats the point of this again? to read amps produced by your alternator or something?

* after re-reading your post.. you have me confused.
lets get a few things straight here, (i'm just trying to figure out what your explaining exactly)
A voltage drop test is normally done over some kind of load, like a relay or a switch.
The amount of power from your emf source is measured in Volts. The Current you are flowing
is meausured in AMPS. And Resistance is measured in ohms. A volt drop test is just telling you
a volt drop caused by resistance. If you are trying to explain how to do lets say like a alternator output
or breakeven test.. then you would be measuring amps, thats what blows fuses. and thats why
you stick it in the a-hole. .. i'm just confused by what you said..
