I don't really know anything about flywheels and I'm sure the guy at the machine shop will ask me how I want it done.
Am I supposed to give him any special instructions?
Just take off 5-6lb?

make sure they re-balance it after they take off the lbs.

There was a large thread about this a couple months ago. Basically some people have had good experiences, where as some say it weakens it and increases the risk of it grenading and ------ ---- up.

So basically, my question is, how much weight can we safely remove from the flywheel?
Is 12lb a good weight to shoot for?

dont lighten it at all, its fine stock. all your going to do is make your car harder to drive around.

5-6 lbs removed for a final weight of 12lbs.Get it rebalaced and you do so at your own risk it could blow into a million pieces and cause injury.

Yea, if your going to go all out with it and try to make it as light as one you would buy, I wouldn't even bother. Shaving off that much weight is putting you on thin ice.

2 Things:

1) Who has the picture of the DSM with the lightened shaved stock flywheel that SHOT through the hood?

2) A dude's buddy on here got his eye jacked up (think lost sight in one eye) from one breaking apart.

Lighten the stocker to 3lbs and buy one of these for your passenger. I hear it's "fantastic"

I've got the pics and the video, Scot is local to me. The car that exploded the flywheel was featured in Turbo, then Scot sold the car to John Shepard.

To have my stocker cut down to 12.25 pounds, stepped properly to maintain even overall thickness and THEN balanced was $175.

You can buy a 12 pounder off ebay for $200.........

I have a friend that has a glass eye from when he was at the drag strip and a flywheel exploded on a car without a scatter shield. He was sitting in the stands when he was struck by a piece of shrapnel from the flywheel.

Yep. Those are the EXACT two people I was talking about. Thanks fellas, sorry I couldn't recall who had those stories. For what it's worth; buy a lightened one.

Re: How Much Weight Can a Machine Shop Take Off The Flywheel?

Well, I just called the machine shop closest to me and he told me that the last time he tried to lighten a flywheel it nearly broke in half and he had to buy a new one for the customer so he doesnt want to even try it again.

So I bought an 11lb one from LSD :y

Re: How Much Weight Can a Machine Shop Take Off The Flywheel?

Lightened flywheels don't even cost that much anymore. I paid like 230 new for my AL 8lb flywheel and a exedy clutch package deal. No problems with the flywheel but the clutch is starting to give up on a stock d15b with bolt-ons. Now a debate should be a Chromoly flywheel or AL flywheel. I've had both but no issues with either. For the price you pay for all the machining and balancing just get one off of ebay.
