How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

Alright so here is the deal...

My current CRX body is like...well I just did a ---- load of body work and all of that ---- and painted it ...but it was rear ended and all that bullshit so i mean...the filler will crack one day and all that so I dont know...

I can buy this CRX for $500 but only as a "parts car". Meaning I can never get a ------- title for it or so the dmv bitch told me. I think i should beable to contact the previous owner and get a title that way or something maybe ??? ???

If I can't get a title, I'm thinking about swapping dashes from my old crx to this one (they both are 91 si's)...What kind of trouble do I get into for this IF i get caught which is very unlikely... I knwo there is a vin number on the firewall and in the door jam but i could paint over the sticker or just remove it in the door jam and i could prolly cut/and weld that vin in the engine bay and grind down the welds..ya know ;)

otherwise, does anyone have some insight on this on if i could ever get a salvage title for it or any advice on what i should do...

also, could I take a parts car and use it for a track car??

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

you could get away with it in my state. I dunno what you have to do in MN, but here, they hardly ever actually see the car. they are the same color?

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

i wouldnt worry about the VIN on the firewall...if minnesota is AS LEANANT as indiana

you could get away with it, i am sure. no one is going to check it out. if it matches the title you have why would they, right? you must be close to the wisconsin and minnesota border.

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

i would swap it out, sell the other dash, minus vin plate, strip it and junk that old shell. not that i have ever done this. :D

I'm in Madison myself, and have owned 10 cars in the past 5 years. Not once have they checked anything about anything with any of them, I'd say go for it. Wisconsin isn't known for cracking down on ---- like that. Swap dem bitches

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

Im pretty sure the one in the engine bay and the one on the dash absolutely must be there. You could easily take a cutoff wheel to both firewalls, go like 1 inch around the vin, weld it onto the parts car, grind the welds smooth, maybe some high heat build primer (fills imperfections and deep scratches, and a shot of your stock red paint, would look great

And for the dash, just swap em. You can drill out the 2 rivets holding the one in the door jam, keep it for a rainy day when your old and you wanna look back, I think its just the 2 rivets that hold it in

Highly doubt youll get caught or even questionned

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

i wouldnt even waste the time with the firewall. when you go to sell it and someone questions you about it,(and they won't) sell it to someone else.

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

i'd change as many vins as i can. something like this came come back and haunt you. then it's a case for the police and they're gonna say you stole the car. if you're gonna do it do it right.

the thing is, even if that does happen, a report of a stolen vehicle with one of those vins would have to be filed, get a bill of sale.

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

Nothing to worry about unless the vehicle is going to leave the state. When it goes to another state then to get a title in that state, it has to be inspected by a certified VIN inspector... they look for all kinds of ----, and the VIN is in many more places than the ones you mentioned... (I am a VIN inspector). There are even secondary VIN locations that even I don't know about, that are only disclosed to level 2 vin inspectors, like most state cops.

ssl2k 11-26-2004 03:04 PM

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

well there is only 3 vin locations isn't there?

the sticker on the door, the dash and then inside the engine bay on crxs....

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

if the car isn't stolen and the cops aren't looking for it, then it should be ok. but looking at howe the radio is missing and the plastic broken around the radio area i'd say that car was stolen.

I got my car shipped from CA and and titled it in WI and it just took them like 4 day to get my title from when I went to the DMV office and they told me since it's an outta state car it gets mailed to me but they never even looked at the car. Nate I say just do what I told you and don't worry about it. Hell you live in the sticks anyway. I wish I could of if my camera wouldn't of died out I could of got Nate some more pics and if my camera wasn't so shitty. But eh, some is better then none.

Just make sure you transfer over ALL the vins. There might be others that you dont know about.. check them all.

Also, if you end up buying that car and dont want it.. :-*

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

I just got pulled over last night, doing alittle turboedit tuning (3rd gear pulls will attract cops 8) ) I just painted my car andi haven't told the registry yet. My dash mounted vin number is also missing (its been missing since i owned the car, and i've been pulled over i'd say a good 50 times) the officer asked if the car was stolen and i said no, and that the vin plate is missing cause this ain't a stock dash. I showed him the other two vin number (engine bay, door) and he was cool, with it, didn't give me any ---- at all. He did say that it was illegal to drive with one Vin missing, and that it is also illegal to drive around with two sets of insurance even if one is expired ???

but i think he's a dumb cop, cause he didn't notice that i didn't have any liscence plate lights, i was running open downpipe 8) and that i hate moving video in view of the driver (laptop).

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

you can do it, just make sure that the old car doesnt have any vins what so ever on it.

also, consider that most junkyards wont take a car w/ no vins on it.

may have to put the sawsall to it and put out a lil in the trash every week.

I wasn't asked any questions when I transfered the title to my truck which was AZ to AZ< but when I went to trasfer my car which was CA to AZ they needed to inspect the vehicle and check the vins. The funny thing is my truck doesn't have any vins in the normal places. The dash is blank, the doorjamb is blank, and I haven't seen one under the hood? ???

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

i heard the same thing about parts cars and yadda yadda, out here a buddy bought a eg hatch shell with a JUNK title on it from pick and pull (junk meaning must stay in the junk yard) sure enough this fool put it all back together took it to the CHP (cali highway patrol) inspection, then did the brake and lamp inspection and he got it registered as a salvage title. i about ---- myself.

the vin on the firewall in the engine bay would be damn near impossible to change i dont think anyone with the skill of being able to weld the piece in would even think about swapping em, if i were you id just drive it, swap the dash, the door vin and call it a day, say you bought it that way and you even registered it since then. :)

thats all fine and dandy till he runs into some1 competent and has to goto a level 2 inspection and the pull more of the real vin numbers off the chassis of the car

i can't believe no one has asked this: why can't you get a title for it? did it just disappear? who's name is it in now?

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

Also, didn't you say that this was in a junkyard? The junkyards around here will not take a car (even if it is junk) unless you have the title in hand. :-\

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

i bought a car like that

vin in the engine bay was grinded off and painted black
never had problems

joetrisman 11-27-2004 07:49 PM

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

Even if you cant take it to the junkyard, I hear that you can bring it to get crushed even without a vin or title. If it comes down to it and you can't get the old title, then you really dont have any options. A LOT of guys I know with jdm cars do this. Only thing to ever worry about (IMO) is if you ever decide to sell it.

Paperchase013 11-28-2004 08:05 AM

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

crx's only have 3 vins. ive scraped them down to the bone many times in the past. there are only 3 vins.

that multiple vin ---- came about in the late 90's, and all thoes "secondary vins" are all just stickers that are easily peeled off.

remeber cars get their vins assigned to them when they are 98% complete at the factory. the firewall is etched, the dashbord vin is riveted in place and the door jamb sticker is affixed. after that minor details are completed on the car (including the windsheild) then the car is shipped out.

i think they say all hondas post 96 (or 98, not sure) has some thing like 27 vins on the car.

go ahead and do it, your car is like 99 years old, you will be fine. ;D

Re:How much trouble do I get in for swapping vins? ..What Should I do?

Look at the pics, the car has plates on it. If it has plates then you can trace the owner and get a new title. It can be done it just takes a little time and you have to file the correct papers. Contact the WI DMV and they will tell you how to do it. Make sure you get all the documents from the junkyard so you can prove you did NOT steal it and you be fine. 8)
