How do i connect two router

Heres the problem :S
There are two computer at my house sharing the cable connection with a router withOut an uplink port.
Eariler today I was trying to connect a freinds router (sharing by three computers) to my router so he can use my connection, he had DSL on the same setup but it`s just too slow in the area we are living in.
I did it by connecting one of the LAN port on my router to the WAN port on his router with a stright throught cable. The WAN light and the LAN light on both router goes on (showing connection) but none of the computer at his house can go online. I am using about 20 feet of CAT5 cable with RJ45 connectors with the wires in the correct order.

Now as i read mroe online, since there are no uplink port on my router. do i need a crossover cable to make the connection work? Everyones saying all the built in up-link port has an internal crossover done so u can use regular stright through cable. now since mine has no up-link port should i fab up the crossover wire to make it work? :S :l

WE have a setup like that at my house.

Try plugging the second routers cable into one of the standard Lan ports

If your router dont' have a uplink port, then it's most likely you need to make a crossover cable. I never like the new hub/switch/router that says it has a smart uplink port which would auto detect if you need a straight or cross cable. ::), it never work for me. So, I just go with old school way and make a cross over cable.

With the crossover cable i should plug it into the WAN port of his correct?

you need a switch and not another router.

plug all your computers into the first router then take the last avaliable port plug that into the lan port on the second router and i should work. :-\

Re: How do i connect two router

ok , i'll try to explain this the best i can without going into alot of technical ----.

basically all you really need is a 5 port hub/switch, then your ---- will work.

but if you don;t have that , well its kinda tricky.

basically only one device is getting a network address unless you make a rollover cable and change your routing table, its really not all that hard to set up, as long as you understand how to subnet an ip address.
but ---- if i'm going to explain that, heres a link to s subnet calculator and a site that explains how it works dudeness.

Re: How do i connect two router

maybe its the router, and mine is especially easy to set up, but the one on the internet is set as a gateway with dhcp enabled. it is pluged into a lan port of another router that ios set as a router with dhcp disabled. works like a gem and 2 wireless routers gives great signal throughout my entire house

you need someting like that, and if you want to go wireless, you need a wireless access point. wich is basicly a wireless hub/switch. routers arnt made to hook up to other routers.

You dont run switches right after the modem because when you do that its like making the whole intenret part of your home network, but your setup should be like

Modem > Router > computer
> computer
> computer
> switch >computer
>comptuer
>computer

I forgot that some routers you can set into access point mode so they act like a switch. If you know how to configure your router check that out.
