house speakers...

My wife and I have been talking about getting some good house speakers. Back in the day, in the 90's :P i saved up $500 and bought a "surround sound" JVC system. It sounded awesome at the time. Now 7 years down the road, its time to give them up.

The receiver is still working awesome. I just need some new speakers. I want something that will sound awesome, not necessarly extremly loud, but a nice thump.

I listened to these while at home, and i was 100% amazed at the sound without a sub. For $218 a pair, you cant go wrong, and I am highly considering these.

What kind of speakers do you have.

you heard wrong. my friend puts his RF's threw hell and back and they are still going strong. owell, IMO they are deadly and worth cash, considering he paid 1500 for just the towers.

Bose aren't worth ----. You pay big bucks for tiny speakers.

JBL Concert series is the ----.

Re:house speakers...

I think bose sounds great, but you cant beat a floor speaker for the ranges that they have. I have JBL's with 2 10' drivers a piece and they are amazing. They use metal tweeters that will make youe ears bleed they are so sharp. I have the northridge series from a few years back; got them off of ubid for a steal. That site has gone downhill but you may want to check them out.

Re:house speakers...

JBLs are good, Bose are bad, m'kay? The way they're baffled masks the true quality (or lack thereof) of their speaker cones. Their saving grace is that they're well-engineered, but in the end you're buying a well-engineered piece of crap. Unless you spring for their $2000+ surround systems, and who wants that? :P When my fiancee was DJing we had a pair of Cerwin Vega floor standing tower 3-ways with the 15" woofers, those things were ------- LOUD, good thing we don't have any neighbors. We were powering them with the Onkyo 2 channel receiver, said to only put out 100watts per channel, but I challenge ANY receiver (regarless of power rating) to push those (or any) speakers as hard as it did. When she got out of DJing we just got a basic Onkyo home theatre setup, 6.1 channel, and it sounds damn nice. Onkyo receiver's amps are designed much more solidly than other amps (Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood etc.) and will make any speaker sound better. Follow this general rule of thumb: Spend 50% of your budget on your receiver/DVD/CD player, and 50% on your speakers. You will be happy.

Let's stop messin' around, you know you want these ones:
http://www.rbhsound.com/images/produ...calnogrill.gif

RBH's are maufactured right up the road from me and I know Roger the owner. He designs some badass speakers, and these took best of show in the Consumer Electronics Show in Begas last year.

They cost a mint though!!

Re:house speakers...

dont ever say you dont need a sub, GO GET ONE, biggest difference in my entire setup.

Sony DD/DTS Receiver 5x100w
JVC Bookshelf (next upgrade)
JBL Centre/Rear speaker set
Sony 150w powered 12" sub

any decent home theatre front speakers aren't designed to put out bass because most people have a sub that are into those cost levels. my sub was only like 250, and it was 250 well spent.

Get some decent full range floor standing speakers, no more then 8" speaker size. Save a little there and get a sub if u can.

A friend of mines spends THOUSANDS on his home theatre (integra components w/ energy speakers). He has a crappy 8" sub and my system outputs 5x the bass of his just because of a sub.

Re:house speakers...

Onkyo amps do indeed rock.

SkunT 01-06-2005 09:13 AM

Re:house speakers...

I was looking at those JBLs last night at circuit city last night. they sounded just as good as the bose. they were a floor speaker, 1 10" sub in each, with a mid and a tweeter. they sounded really good.

I already have a receiver/cd player/dvd player/even a vhs and a record player is hooked up.

im still searching. -im the kind of person when it comes to buying something that will be with me for a long time, i research it like no other, and then buy the best bang for the buck, not necessarly the most expensive, or the cheapest. thanks for the opinions though.

To make a bose sound like a bose you need to buy the whole package. I just finished installing a a Lifestyle 48 system........wholy crap what sound!!! Yes the speakers are small, but they only produce the higher frequencies, the real sound comes from the "Acoustimass module" (subwoofer to the rest of us). You need a proper room to set the system up in and the small speakers are not meant for direct sound, you point them at the wall so the sound "bounces" off the wall, more life like that way I guess. Anyways........you gotta be rich as ---- to buy the whole system, but with an RF remote, the ability to "add-on" rooms and the system stores all your music for you, you can't beat the Bose.

Re:house speakers...

I got these before my BX credit card account I got in the air force was up. There not very big but they sound really nice and clear. Just some nice Cerwin Vegas powered by a Kenwood receiver. Nothing fancy just something I got from a local pawn shop for 100 bucks a couple of years ago. I'm not into the big floor speakers since I got these when I was living by myself and my apartment wasn't very big.

Hey
I sold home audio for 3 years for my job and DO NOT buy bose. they sound fine when you listen to them, but if you compare them to a 300$ pair of infinitys, the infinitys kick their ass.. Another funny thing can anyone who loves bose tell me how much power there powered systems like the life style put out. beacuase they really try to keep it under wraps. 2 years ago the lifestyle 25 which cost 2500$ was 30 watts per channel.

But what is good, I love infinity speakers, harmon kardon and onkyo electronics. Best buy sells junk. Circuit city sells some good stuff.

AND EVERYONE DON'T BUY SPEAKERS OUT OF THE BACK OF A VAN
It's a scam and I have seen many smart people get taken by it. some asssholes drive around and say they were supposed to deliver 2 speakers but they got 2 pair and they have to get rid of them. they say they're worth like 1500 and they'll sell them for 400 or whatever. but they are garbage speakers.

Oh, and you should get a sub no matter what kind of music or movies you watch/listen to. It makes a huge difference.

Re:house speakers...

If you're looking to spend $400-500 anyway, hook yourself up with an Onkyo 6.1 surround system; the speakers kick ass and I think it's about 70Wx6 + 100wx1 (sub) in surround mode and 100wx2 + 100wx1 in stereo mode. Plus you get dolby digital, dts decoding, etc. I think it can't be beat. I spent about $435 on mine, brand new from a local electronics place.

Re: house speakers...

The best home setups come from mixing and matching from multiple manufacturers. My home system is like this:

Sony 7.1 (7x100) Receiver
JBL Northridge E-100 (Fronts)
Bose 701 Bookshelf (Rear)
Yamaha 270W Sub YST-SW515

It's extremely clear and the bass is smoooooooooooth!
