Re: honest opinion needed....
Here's how I see it -
There was nothing 'wrong' with the transmission when you sold it to him, it was working 100% when you did the clutch change. Now, it depends on what the reason was that you changed the clutch out. Also, what did these shops say was wrong? They always try to screw people out of money, and unless it's grinding gears or something major, it's definately not worth 700 bucks.

wtf Frank, why don't you PROVE that it works, bleed the clutch and shut him up.
But if the tranny is toasted you said that "you knew" it was fine then prove it to him, fix the rest and be done with it

I don't know the laws in japan, or if it's us-base laws that apply here, but the fact that he bought it not running, even if you tell him is just a plug wire, it wasn't running, he should have checked the car before or called in a mechanic to check it out.
The most I would do is either try to help him fix what you thought it was, if not maybe give him a couple of hundred to help with the costs, but that's just if I feel good that day and if the guy is not being an ------- about it.
If he is and from the get go started threatening and ----, I wouldn't give him ----.....He'll spend more in court than just fixing the car. I think he's just trying to scare you.
