they have similar bikes in the msf course, they are fun in their parking lot, but I wouldn't want to ride one anywhere else. If you want a sport bike I'd look at the ninja 500, suzuki gs500 or a suzuki sv650 for a good starter that you won't get bored with right away.

i know 2 ppl that got brand new 600's and they say it wasn't fast enough after riding it for a few months
I would get a 750... or an old sport bike so when/if you lay it down, you don't get that mad. I'd get a bike with the intention of learning on it and it going to the ground in some situation.

If a 600 isn't fast enough, they better be on a track. My 599 is a slower 600, and will run 0-60 in half a block, and 0-120 in a full block. It does top out around 140 at full tuck, mostly because I have no fairing.
Rebel 250 is a blast, but you better be well under 6'. At 6'1" I was super cramped on them. Fun little bike around town though. I also had a Ninja 250, very fun. Not very quick, but it handled very well and returned 70mpg even running the ---- out of it. Stick to older models, it seems they got retuned every few years since '88 (first year of 88-07 generation) for more torque and less hp. I bought mine for $1g and sold it for $1g, only paid for gas, insurance ($100/yr), and oil in between.

All these people saying your going to waste your money are full of ----. If you buy a small used bike to learn on and don't ---- it up to bad you can sell it for about what you paid for it, there are always more people who want a starter bike. That way you don't start on something to big or nice and wreck your body or wallet. Yes the 250 is a slow bike compared to basically anything else but it's your first bike not your last. ultimately it's up to you but weigh the pros and cons before you make your choice.
250 pro's- cheap overall,gas,repairs,insurance. Easy to ride/learn on. Retains it's value
cons- 1.on the slow end(14s 1/4mile), 2. some internet people may think less of you?
