BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

So I go down to the subaru dealer last Friday to test drive a new WRX (for the 3rd time) and to just for shits and giggles see what my payments would be like....

Too much: Im a new buyer and cant qualify for their 1.9APR...so my payments are a bit much. So the sales man has "Just what might fit" ::)

So he goes to the front of the lot and shows me this 2000 2.5RS...AUTOMATIC! with stars in my eyes I say no way, so he shows me a 2003 VW GTI VR6, 6spd 210 hp w/ traction controls, and every option known to man and 20K:o

So anyways, long story short I get wrote up on Friday night to buy it, went home, freaked over my skyhigh payment, came back and checked out the 2.5RS for the weekend, came back and bought it on Sunday.

Its a 2000 with only 27k miles, and owned by an old guy

WOOOHHOOOO no more 1983 diesel RABBIT!!

I really love this car, it handles way better then my Energy bushing/tokico shock/h+r spring CRX ever did. It even has some zip to it. But the car is screaming "Im underpowered! give me my EJ20" (the JDM WRX engine)

Ive got a t-25 sitting in my garage right now too....hmmmm

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

I paid 13k for it, pretty good price. Its quick but not fast. You can really tell its underpowered, and its a shame. These cars are supposed to have like 250-280 hp on the EJ20 twin turbo engine, but instead I get 166 on an NA EJ25. The wierd thing about these boxer engines is the torque, the numbers are usually always = to the hp numbers, even on the 4 cylinders.

-yes unfortunalty its an Auto, but that means an easier time on the 4wd tranny when I boost it

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

I can get a Imreza GT turbo for about $12K over here.
It's actually just like the WRX 4wd turbo etc... same power

IM thinking about getting the wrx or sti but the factory turbo'd one ......i really like t he sound of them......

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

EJ20 bolts in. You will have to use a WRX crossmember as the downpipe will not fit w/ the RS x-member. Also, the engine/ecu harness is intergrated w/ the MAIN harness. In otherwords.. wiring is a huge PITA!

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

Nice car, I always liked the look of those Impreza's better than the newer ones. Why not just turbocharge the stock engine? You'll get heaps of torque out of that 2.5 and they are fairly strong. Also, I've heard that the auto's actually have less problems than the manual tranny's. Good luck!

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

Yeah I am going to probably turbo this car, but I will probably wait a few months. I think my JDM Nissan T-25 (was for my CRX RIP) is going into this thing.

You know surprisingly the auto in this car aint half bad, if you drop it out of Drive into 3rd gear it'll pull to about 6K before shifting (almost redline) Definatly the best auto car ive ever driven. I am in no way regretting buying it at all (okay so I did look up 5spd trannies on Ebay)

Semnos....what can I say Im always jealous of what you have on that side of the pond.

This is a pic of my friends WRX turbo on the dyno, he put out 276hp and 272 lb/ft torque!

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

yah dont put an ej20 in it. just slap a turbo kit onto it and your fine. i think it has a bigger displacement too. im not sure.o yeah, you might need the pistons and connecting rods, but othe rthan that, i think its mostly just swapping it.

I've always thought those cars in 2dr looked a helluva lot better than a WRX. Nice car, good luck with it.

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

the ej20 wrx engine will waste the 2.5's auto or manual, neither last long (esp if you wail on them) i say go EJ25 and corresponding drivetrain... thatll be sexy

Semnos 05-03-2004 06:41 PM

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

Yeah man turbo that 2.5
It can make a lot of more power then the EJ20.
Well if you have money for some internals etc... that EJ25 would be hella fast....no replacement for displacement

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

yah wasnt that gen faster than the 2002+ generation wrx? i mean wrx vs the wrx, jdm not usdm.

WOO WOO another honda guy going sube. I did the same but still kept my 88 hatch, traded the 97 rice mobile Civic. Read more about it. Swaps have been done before, and turboing that engine has been done, there was a supercharger kit once also. I have a 2002 WRX and a co-worker has a 2000 2dr 2.5 RS I always liked the 2.5 RS.
here's my car

sweet man, congrats ;D not even a week ago you were talking about how shitty it was not having a nice car and all and now look at ya, now you just have to save up for that ring ;) i'm definitely getting a wrx for a daily driver when the si is paid off and i can make it my 'weekend warrior', but for now, i can't afford it.

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

Those 2.5L engines are nice to turbo, but the compression is a bit high; i'd reccomend thicker headgaskets. Also if you want to run more than 4psi (you will) you'll need an intercooler. FMIC is best. Those engines detonate like crazy without one.

ok, just to let people know, EJ20s suck ass, well at lest ones off of MY02 WRXs, i'll try and post the pics of what happened to my friend's WRX. Long story short, it has probally like 12 holes in the block :-\ stock boost and turbo, just intake, DP and catback. It has the best plate ever tho

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

rather hard to do that to a wrx. especially what has been done. it probobly had a bad af ratio.

ej20s are great engines. sim[ply superb. how many engines come with computer that will digitally advance or retard timing 20 dehreese in 1 rpm?

accordepicenter 05-05-2004 02:52 PM

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

the engines are pretty tough but i hate subaru transmissions. They needed to have good managemant or theyd have SERIOUS failures under warranty, and thats no good. Too bad most hardcore WRX owners looking for big power go with a TurboXS UTEC...

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

Ouch, can you say Detontion!....
Anyways, if I do go ej20 I mean the old JDM STI engine from the GC8 chasis. (they came twin turbo!) But I dont think I want to do that...

Been doing some searching on various Suby boards, and its just too easy to turbo a suby engine, no real turbo manifold required, just an up pipe and down pipe, even found a few places that sell the pipes to bolt on a new WRX turbo.

As far as this engine goes, its got damn high compression and way advanced ignition, so I am definatly going to need to manage that. It runs hot (probably is the source of the detonition problems w/o an intercooler) so not too much boost.

I was going to keep this car a few years then trade up to an sti or such, but the more I drive it the more I like it. It looks waayyyy better then the new bug eyes WRX, and is a lot lighter. I just cant beleive how well it handles, Ive never driven a car that could out turn my old CRX, until now...and its still all stock.

I think this is going to be a total sleeper turbo project, I dont even want to lower it, I dont want to mess with the car at all...It just needs the power it was meant to have, I just screams "I was supposed to get 280hp dumbass USDM!!"

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

Congrats on the car man. Looks good. I like that generation, but I only have one problem with them, I don't think the tail lights do the fron justice. The front looks all fierce and rugged, but the tail lights look like a shy little school girl.

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

turbo it and put some wrx pistons in it. thats all. probobly might want to put in a wrx ecu aswell.

crxrx7 05-05-2004 09:55 PM

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

Yeah I will tell you why they detonate so bad. You see that square on the piston. Well that is bad. It has a hard edge which gets hotter than the rest on the piston. Now if you took a dremel to that and rounded out that edge you would be good for 10 psi. If you want you can do this little experiment. It involes fire! Go get your dads propane tourch and a chisle or anything that is thick and has sharp edges. Now take you blow torch and heat that chisle up. Watch what happens to the edges. they will glow first then it keeps getting brighter and brighter. That is what causes detonation. It is hotter than your sparkplug which hasn't sparked yet. Hmmmmmm?

SpeedyJAY 05-06-2004 10:24 AM

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

Good call....Maybe that could be why ignition is advanced so much :-\

Did that guy retard his ignition any more then stock I wonder?

Re:BY by Honda: HELLO SUBARU!!! My new Ride (56k go away)

he was running no management so I dont think so. Like i said it was just I/E, i think the real reason it happened was because he cracked cyl. 4 ringlands, causeing oil in the intake and then detionation led to this. I told him he had cracked them when he first started getting some oil in the intake. He said it was the PCV valve ::)oh well you win some you loose some
