jet engines operate on what's know as the Bernoulli Principle. To keep it simple you use a combination of the turbo and a convergent/divergent duct to control the velocity and pressure of the air. Its compressed, while maintaining velocity, slowed down, mixed with fuel and ignited, and then sped back up and "blown" onto the exhaust wheel of the turbo. They have essentially built a common aircraft APU ( auxiliary power unit). They don't make tons of thrust, but still flow alot of air. Really, it's just stupid loud and fun to play with.

I went to school in ireland for a semester and we worked with a setup just like that in one of our thermodynamics labs.
