Homemade Beer Pong Table... (56k lick sack)

So during the fall semester this past school year, me and my roomates decided to start collecting beer caps for no reason from all the beer we drank. As the year progressed, we got the genious idea to make a beer pong table from them. After combining our caps, some that we bought off of ebay, and our dad's caps, we had plenty to work with. I have been meaning to post the pictures for a while even though the initial build was finished over 2 months ago. The parts list is as follows:

All purchased from Home Depot:

- 3/4" thick plywood (4'x8') ~$38.00 (expensive as a bitch, but sturdy, durable, and worth it)
- polyurethane/wood stain ~$10.00 (just wanted some kind of protection for the wood)
- All-purpose adhesive ~$10.00 (stuff we used was liquid nails brand, just to make sure caps stayed in place)
- 1/2" radius quarter molding ~$15.00 (couldn't figure out how to describe this, its for the edge of the table, and the cross-section is a quarter-circle of 1/2" radius)

These costs are all pretty much approximate, save for the plywood, which is right. The first thing we did was cut the plywood down to a reasonable size. Because we had a lot of red, white, and blue beer caps, we decided on an American flag. I look up the proper proportions for the flag online, and cut down the board accordingly. We made our board about 6.5'x3'. I would make it a bit longer if I had to do it again, like 7'x3'. We laid out an American flag first to get a feel for how big it would be. The proportions are near exact, and if you don't believe there are 13 stripes or 50 stars, go ahead, count them, trust me, they are there. After figuring out the flag configuration, sealed the board with 2 coats of clear polyurethane so it was waterproof. Then the molding was cut to size, glued downed, and screwed in. Then we started placing caps and glueing them down. Be aware that any design, even like this, requires a lot of planning for it to turn out right. On to the pics:

This is a long and tedious process, and the table needed to be put in its place

Finally done, a butt-load of caps, probably around 3000-3500 caps total:

Lastly, an action shot of the table being put to good use

Thats all for now. I said before that this was the initial build. The next phase involves putting a layer of clear epoxy resin down over the caps and inside the lip so that there is a clear, smooth, flush surface. This will seal the caps in, make for easier clean-up, and allow the table to look better than it already does. Will update when this happens. Let me know what you all think, later,

oh.. how i miss college... and beer pong..

what did you use to cover the top of the caps? We used liquid nails, or something like that, and let it sit.

trust me, when you spill beer on that table if it gets in between the caps.. its hell to get out.. a week later (of course you dont clean ---- the same day) =)

actually, I'm a Mechanical Engineering major, so I don't have a ton of time. I actually just worked on it here and there for a 1/2 hour to hour each night for about a month and a half. We completed most of the actual construction of the course of two nights right before Quadmania, our spring festival at school.

Actually, nothing is covering the caps right now, they are glued down. The plan is to lay a clear epoxy resin or something to seal them in and give it a smooth finish. And yes, it does get nasty between those caps. That is why we used polyurethane on the plywood in the first place, so it wouldn't seep into the board. I haven't found a good epoxy that I think will work well for this but I will update when I do.

Put a sheet of plexiglass over it and call it a day.

if the caps don't sit above the trim around the outside it would be nice to get a clear resin and pour it in, sure it might cost a lot but it would make it last forever and you wouldn't be able to move the plexi or crack it, and it would be pretty sturdy and heavy...

I give a thumbs up for effort, however I would've gone the route of the cans not bottles. Maybe it is just around here but if you fill a milk jug with tabs you get a FREE keg and tap. We're pretty damn close, need maybe a couple hundred more tabs.

lol.. I always hated those kids that went around asking for beer caps.. I always thought it was so dorky.. but looking at your table sort of gave those kids a measure of respect..

We filled up a 5 gallon water jug (the kind that go on those water dispensers) with beer caps. Never thought to make a table covered with them. We did make a cool table with about 50 different beer labels from bottles on the top with a layer of polyurethane over it.

Hmm... I'm 24, and I've been to my fare share of parties. I guess they weren't "GOOD college parties" because they didn't have beer pong. LoL.

I always thought good college parties consisted of lots of beer and hot drunk women?
