Home Theater Guru's--Need help

Well i am going to buy my father a new receiver/amplifier for xmas.
He has bluray and all that good stuff and a 52" LCD.

So i am looking for the best Receiver below 450 bucks. Has to have HDMI in and Out and 7.1 Chanel surround.
Anyone know of super good deals on things of the likes?

This is HMT, bitch, and if you think that was bad advice maybe you should make a home theater thread on HT.

Below $1000 on a receiver and your wasting your time with 7.1, well really at this point you are wasting your time with 7.1 anyway, as there are only a few titles encoded with it at this point. That and if you are buying something less then $1000 it won't drive the speakers that are good enough for you to notice a difference between 5.1 and 7.1 anyway.

Come to think of it you are as good to get a box set (speakers and receiver and in a box 5.1) on the higher end like an onkyo box set, if you are only gonna spend that kind of money. There is a good sized gap between a good setup and a box setup in price, and performance, and the piece setup that falls in between doesn't sound any better then the box setup that is cheaper, and if you have your hart set on 7.1 you can get that in the box for a few $$$ more.

I have a big whack of $$$$ invested in my home theater, and it is only 5.1, if I get to the point where at least half the titles I rent or buy on blueray are 7.1 I will add better front channels, move the fronts to surround, move the surrounds to surround back.

If you have your hart set on a ~$450 receiver you can't go wrong with any of the following in that price range:
Denon
Onkyo
Yamaha
Pioneer

Well rite now im looking at a Onkyo TXSR606B .
I am just trying to get him something better than what he has rite now, which currently is a Yamaha receiver from 2000. So he has a 52" lcd 120hz 1080p all that ---- w/ bluray and hddvd and he is running all his audio through that pos Yamaha from 2000. So i think anything, 500 and below or not, will be better than what he currently has.

Agree?

I've heard the Onkyo 606 is a good value. I used to sell and install the stuff at Circuit city, and back then ~2001 Harman Kardon was really good ----. Not a lot of people would buy it though because the power levels were stated on the box lower than the $150 sony, even thought the power amps wer far superior in sound quality and real world power. I don't know if they are still good but they were back in the day anyway.

The 606 is decent value, if you can scrounge together the extra ~$100 I would goto the 706 as it is a much better amplifier / receiver.

I have the SR875 (last years 876) I am seriously thinking of jumping up to the 906 as I would really like the networking capability

Well i have found the 606 for 339 shipped so far. If i could find a 706 for 450 or less i would pick that up. Any suggestions?

sony sound like ---- and have fucked up menu controls. used to have a panasonic before the sony and the bass was amazing. crisp and low, tapered off as the hz came up so the higher frequencies didn't out-sound the low tones. no speaker cracks, no humming from poorly designed amp circuitry. other than that, i can't give much but at least i gave you an option.

I have a kenwood reciever. The Cable box thing has the HDMI inputs for my TV and my RCA goes into the reciever. I am very happy with my set-up and I think I paid like right at $400 at the PX...

go to walmart. decent setup, decent price. more than you'll need without opening your own theater.
