Home network issues
Well I just setup my PC in my room and want to network it with the PC in the living room. All my pictures, movies, music, etc etc are on that computer. I ran the network setup wizard on both computers and selected the same options for both.
Now when I go to My Network Places on the living room PC it pulls up the shared folders between both PCs. When I go to it on the one in my room it doesn't pull up anything from the living room computer. Any ideas? Thanks in advance |
Re: Home network issues
make sure the name of the network on both computer are the same

Re: Home network issues
Yep it's HOME for both. Already pinged the other PC and it shows up. For some reason it just isn't showing up on here.

Re: Home network issues
Try rebooting both machines? I've had the exact problems in the past and it just started working one day for no apparent reason.
What I used before that was AIM lol. I'd just get on two sn's and file transfer from one to the other. Worked quickish, around 4mbits/s |
Re: Home network issues
File/printer sharing on on both computer?

Re: Home network issues
open up windows explorer
in the address bar type in \\computer name your going to connect to on your network*\C$ *the exact name of the computer. if you can see the computers printer sharing options in windows explorer, then just modify the address with c$ or the drive you want to share. it will most likely ask your for your password or login. its the standard user login for that computer. C$ represents the dirve you want to share. c,d,f or anything. hell, even cdrom drives. usually sharing will pull up specific items with the shares enabled without using the login information. using $ will enable the entire drive to be shared if the user inputs the correct login information. |
Re: Home network issues
In the living room I put in \\Dmj and it will pull up my computer. Put in \\Family and it will pull up all the files I am sharing on that computer.
Now when I go to my room and type in \\Dmj or \\Family it says: "Windows cannot find "\\Family'. Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking search" I was told to ping the other computer with mine. So I open a dos window. C:\Documents and Settings\Doug>ping Family Pinging Family [192.168.15.3] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.xxx.xx.x: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.xxx.xx.x: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.xxx.xx.x: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.xxx.xx.x: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Ping statistics for 192.xxx.xx.x: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 <0% loss>, Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms C:\Documents and Settings\Doug> So it pinged it. I just can't figure out why in the hell I can't get anything to show up on here. |
Re: Home network issues
did you try
\\Family\C$ ?? |
Re: Home network issues
is this in vista or xp?
in vista you'll need to turn on simple file sharing. in both you might need to enter persmissions for "everyone" on the folder |
Re: Home network issues
One is XP Pro and one is XP Pro 64 bit
