Home Made Roll Cages?????
ok well my cousin gave me a great idea... he said why not use a manual hydraulic pipe bender to bend the pipe in order to make our own rollcages.... and im thinking... holy ----.... thats fucken clever i would never have thought of that... now my question to you guys is do you think it would work... and what size pipe and gauge thickness do they usually use for rollcage setups????
heres a pic... and heres the link... let me know if you guys think this would work, if its ever been done... or is it just a waste of time and money... http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/pho...8099/38024.gif http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=38024 |
Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
sure it'll work. If you buy a roll cage for an american car you get a bunch of tubing, some being bent, you get to make it fit yourself. Making the bends right and getting it to fit well is the tough part. You might want to look into ordering one from a company though beause some places you can get them to make you a cage just from measurements of the car, and they're not expensive

Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
fork thats bullshit ;D I wana see -------- make the roll cage, someone help him with the size piping/thckness. I am sure that thing wil bent the right size pipe,

Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
This can be done, but there are a few point to be made.
- Better quality roll bars are generally constructed from 120 wall DOM tubing. Cheaper ones are from 090 wall non-DOM tubing. (What do you trust your life to? I'd want the best I can make) - Tubing is sized by OD, pipe is sized by ID. - That Harbor Freight bender is for pipe, not tubing. - If you bend tubing in the pipe bender, it will create wrinkles in the back side of the tubing. - Each wrinkle is a great place for a tube to collapse under stress, like when you roll the car. - If you build your roll bar out of pipe, it will bend correctly in the pipe bender. But I have no clue what might happen under stress, and don't think I want to trust my life to it... We have made rock rails for jeeps using that exact bender and pipe, and they have faired well. Just not sure I want to have a roll bar made from it.... Two cents from Craig |

Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
just make it overkill on the bends then. use thicker pipe if bending that ---- makes it weaker. 8)

You need to take a class on strength and materials to learn how metal behaves when you deform it. |

Can everyone quit quoting every single part of a post they are responding to? We just read the fucken post before yours, no need to try to make us re-read it. Damn. <rant>
Ghetto, I thought this was a good idea, but I think maybe we should buy the hoop from a manufacturer, and we'll add to it with straight pieces. Most bars I've seen in mild steel are 1 3/4 pipe with .134 thickness. www.swracecars.com sells a 8 pt. hoop for like $150 plus shipping. ??? |

I'm building an LS block to put my b16 head on and to boost the ---- out of, that should be fast if all goes well. |
Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
Yeah, whatever, you still did it,......ricer.

Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
---- it... im still gonna do it... im most likely gonna reinforce the bends with some pplates.....
IM not that fuckn dumb.... well just have to see what happens.... I just think.... A rollcage is better than NO rollcage? unless its one of those stupid APC showcage, i think i could do without a pipe through the forehead in a rollover |

Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
usually and eight point roll cage will be made out of 1 5/8, but 6 point roll bar would be made out of 1 3/4, and they usually made out of .134 wall. the NHRA rule for thickness is less than that but they use sonic testers for the thickness and the tubing will get thinner on part of teh bends, and manufacturing procees for DOM tubing can't control the thickness perfectly.

Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
why bend the pipe, just cut it at angles and fit it together, wouldn't that work?
|
Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
it's easier to bend them kyle, but yeah just cut and weld would work.

Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
i piped bender is free man, just stick the ---- in the vice and wrench ;D, i know hardware stores let you borrow one for a weekend for 10 bucks, you'd save so much time and welding wire with a bender.
|
Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
but wouldn't the bends be weaker than a solidly welded corner?
|
Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
yes, so you just double up on the bends ;D, but serously, have you seen roll cages in civics/crxs? they don't have that many bends, like maybe 4 or 6 bends total, so i'd be more worried about what size pipe to use then a bender.
here are some examples for you guys... This car would be a bitch to get in and out everyday, notice the size of the pipe and the fancy X and triangle in the door opening, thats skill. also notice how the pipe is painted to match the A-pillar, sexy! this one was built in the car, can't take this baby out. http://www3.telus.net/molnarb/23034.jpg This is not the way to do a ------- Roll cage, I hope this one if fake and the ricer crashs and dies. http://www3.telus.net/molnarb/i=wMjU...k1NDE%253D.jpg This is very ------- nuts. equiped with the nice foam, you loose you passenger seat with this one haha, but again, notice the limited amounts of bends. also, take alook at the cool video camara holder. http://www3.telus.net/molnarb/l.jpg I count 4 bends total in the picture, again if you makje one like this you either are building a race car or you don't like road head ;) Did you see the bar going under the dash? thats cool. http://www3.telus.net/molnarb/wetoddimage.jpg ::::Edit:::: these images are hosteed on my own ----, ---- WE-todd. |
Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
---- it, I need the interior space I'm going to build the roll cage on the outside, that way my paint will be protected in case of a wreck.

Re:Home Made Roll Cages?????
you heard wrong.....i got accused of stealing and they told me i needed to take some time off till they found out what happened. ---- them though, i dont want to work for them if they think i stole some ---- when i didnt. those ------- chinese can kiss my ass if they think im gonna go back and work for them. i might be mexican but ---- man i dont start stealing till after the 2nd week from when i start ... not the 1st.
and yes you did give me credit....but you still posted my idea you dirt beaner...... i might go to steves later... |
