Home Made lips

Well after having an accident, I'm going all stock bumpers. My car needs a more aggresive look like lips or something. Has anybody ever done some? Maybe with fiberglass, a sheet of metal or something? Also will the 1992-1995 Civic HB lips fit into the CRX (I know it will need some modification), but has anybody tried it?

From my experience working at a bodykit manufacturer, I would say make exactly what you want out of wood. (cheap and easy to work with) Once you get it perfect, coat it with something that will allow you to cover it in fiberglass and still be able to seperate the wood from the fiberglass. They have some toxic chemical that does this, but I don't remember the name. There should be more than one. ;)

if someone is up to doing this for a crx i would take one ;D

i'm sure you could find a ton of crx owners that would also if it was nice

Don't waste your money on the seperation chemicals, use aluminium foil. Put two layers on the wood, the fibreglass will come right off.

So the piece of wood would be the mold right? But how will I get the wood to curve around the bumper? I was thinking of using a sheet of metal since its more flexiable than wood. Anymore ideas? Thanx

Re:Home Made lips

lol...You would need to carve the wood man, not bend it ;)

Re:Home Made lips

hehe, there is a whole lot more to it then that, doing it fully custom and not making it off of another piece should take you at least 100 hours to do, and will cost you more in materials then buying a new bumper. unless you want it to look dumb, in which case do it. remember, a male mold will make a pretty inside, a female mold will make a pretty outside, don't forget to account for mold to mold tolerances (there's gonna be an extra 1/8" in there of fiberglass, and DO NOT USE WOOD. use foam, it'll be way more manageable and come out better.

I work at a BMW dealer, but i just got offered a composites fabrication position at metalcraft (the company who makes the concept cars for most of the auto manufacturers at the auto shows. I didn't take it because it's 7am-8pm every day (including weekends and I have school at night. (I WIN)

Re:Home Made lips

ok, getting back to the subject at hand (sorry guys ::))how much lower does the OEM lip hang by the bumper? I'm thinking of buying a thin sheet of metal, and then shape it like the 1992-1995 HB lip, and maybe powder coated.

Re:Home Made lips

the optional factory lip looks damn good in my opinion (for the CRX) especially if the car is lowered at all.
Ebay'll probably rip you off for one, check somewhere like http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/
Look up bumper assemblies for the CRX.

Look around on the web for different styles. Most shops that carry lips are in Europe somewhere. (I guess it's more popular over there.) Anyway, I've seen a few shops in NorthAmerica that sell a couple different styles.

Thanx Icarus. For the people that have the stock OEM lip: how much lower does the OEM lip hang by the bumper for a 1990-1991 CRX? I'm taking interest in the stock oem lip. Also if anybody has some pics. Thanx

Re:Home Made lips

The OEM lip drops profile an extra 1.25-1.5". That plus my H&R springs with about 1.5" drop puts my bumper a cozy 2" off the ground. Looks mean.

Now where in the hell can I find the optional 2 piece skirt for the rear bumper...

Re:Home Made lips

I think u can use wood due to the squareness of the front of the CRX. I would a strip of plywood (2-3")and cut it up into five pieces. One long piece for the front, two for the side, and two small pieces for it to go into the wheel well a little. The last two pieces are optional just so your lip wont look too homemade ;) and unfinished when your wheel is turned one way. After you are done measuring and cutting each panel, go ahead and get some "L" brackets and mount the panels together. Hold your assembled prototype against the front bumper. Make the necessary bends on the "L" brackets, and cuts on the panels. Once you are happy with the wooden spoiler, go ahead and wrap it in foil as stated above and coat with fiberglass.
