HMT project for Posi/LSD
Ok well I am just gonna throw this out and see if anyone knows what i'm talking about or knows if it can be done. Well, I know that on a rear end for a rear wheel drive car you can weld the spider gears and you will have full time posi. I know some people who have done it to cheap old mud boggers. Now, can this be done to a front wheel drive car or is front wheel drive completely different? If so, I figured, why not weld the spider gears and have posi instead of paying out the ass for a lsd unit from quaife or whatever the hell. What the hell is quaife anyway, shut up with the quaife.

a quaife is a vagina fart.
and yes you can weld up the diffs in honda tranny's |

The next best thing to welding the gears, is the "SPOOL" which is in the 300 range. |

Re: HMT project for Posi/LSD
I had this one my '78 454 camaro. Every time I would take a turn, wheels go "chirp chirp chirp" and attract plenty of unwanted attention.

Re: HMT project for Posi/LSD
Also, here is the bad news...........
V8 rear ends don't use cast spiders, they are machined from solid stock. Talking GM 10 and 12 bolt rears, not the shitty 7.5/7.625 Monza rears used in 82+ F Bodys. The cast Honda spiders will become brittle and the welds. When the welds break (LOL F&F!) the tranny will explode just like if you ate thru a diff pin. http://www.bettendorf.com/~mrbone/pi...y/P3130001.JPG Now come up with a Detroit Locker or PowerTrax, then you might have something! |
Re: HMT project for Posi/LSD
Not always... beau's j1 was welded for along time, yes the welds broke but it didnt explode like that one at all.
In fact I beleive he just rewelded the living ---- out of the thing |
Re: HMT project for Posi/LSD
so he had the tranny in out 2-3 times???????
Time spent welding?????? OBX for $400 is so much easier. |
Re: HMT project for Posi/LSD
Yes? probably more..
30 mins? OBX lsds have how many cars proven over 500whp? What like 1? Welding a diff is alot cheaper than 400 dollars :P |
Re: HMT project for Posi/LSD
^^^^
More then that. Also they have been on 800whp civics. In NO WAY do you want to run a welded diff on the street. You might get lucky at the track, but I too have seen broken parts in the pits just from pulling out of the slot and driving to the staging lanes. Also I've seen honda rally car with welded diffs, worked great in the dirt, but the drivers HATED it when it came time to transit on the pavement. |
Re: HMT project for Posi/LSD
On the junkyard racers you just use a hole saw to put a hole in the bottom of the tranny, then weld the diff, then use a frost plug and fill the hole. You can do it just driving the car onto a set of ramps without dropping the tranny.
- I dont suggest anyone do this, but I know it works. |

OOO I could see that producing GREAT welds. All the oil and crap. I don't know how you would wash it all out inorder to combat perosity. Plus inorder to realy do it well it would have to be tigged. |
