Not to mention the HO puts out more than that STOCK. :1
Here is a link to the info that all 4.0 owners use as the bible of the inline jeep 6:
http://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/index.html
that should answere some questions.
the older 4.2 inline I think generated 160 HP at the crank but the torque was in the 260 range. then Chrysler revamped it and horse power went up, but torque went down due to the smaller crank but a increase in piston size. So the secret is to get the larger crank of the 4.2, the rods of the 4.2, but use the stock pistons of the 4.0 and you get a 4.5. But Im going to go with .030 pistons to up the size. But thats all down the road.
And I am wrong about the potential of a 4.0 N/A engine. It is actually more then what I said, but you get into cams, and larger pistons to achieve full potential.
I just want to be different then everyone else and go the turbo route. thats why I signed up on this board. because I have never done something like this and I will need some guidence along the way. I did all my homework and researched and now its time to get it done.

The 4.0 is a strong motor, but they are weak as ---- from the factory IMO. I've heard of tons of people beating the hell out of them and still getting ~250k miles and more out of them. I would imagine they could handle a good amount of boost.

LMAO:
I wish I had a 4.7 V-8.
No im stuck with my stump puller. What a misunderstanding
Cool
The reason I wanna keep boost low to begin with is exactly what you say. They arn't too weak.
I ran my jeep on its side "literelly" On my side for an extended amount of time trying to climb out of a hole and the engine never coughed once! I love my motor. I will never get rid of it.
when I build my stoker with all the bling bling parts, I will up the boost to around 10-12 with a stand alone or piggy back system. Until then, my target budget is below 1000k in parts and Im doing all the fab work. I will start with a bullet proof foundation and spend where I need it. Im even going to use my stock air box since I have a K&N drop in filter :P and stock TB :P
the build will start the first of march because I have an event I want to attend the last week in February.
But when I start, I will need the occasionall advice.

Right now im only runnin 36" with your typical spring lift. Im plannin for the out come. It will be a 4 link coil over rear with a back half and a sawzall to take away all the excess skins. same for the front. I will post a pic of the current stance this week. Until then, here is a teazer:
Every thing is done in phase's
Just the turbo phase came up before the next phase which is a back half.
I know you all hate links, but this is my insperation. This is NOT my jeep! just insperation:

Re: hmt noob, turbo for a Jeep YJ
I dunno If I have just bought 2 lemons, or if its the way i drive them but I have blown up two 4.0's in two different cherokee's. I spun a rod bearing on one('87 4.0, auto) and pretty much lost all oil pressure but decided to drive it to the scrap yard, threw a rod on the way. The second one('92 HO 5 speed.) I was on the way home from work and it blew the #1 rod right through the oil pan at about 3000 rpm. Then I continued to drive it to my house where I drove it for hours in the woods jumping it and running over trees etc. they're tough..i love jeeps..buy i'm never buying another jeep with a 4.0 in it. Don't get me wrong the HO had a ton of torque, it was alot of fun peeling out because it came with a factory tow package with posi rear end, so it would kick out everywhere..damn I want another jeep.

If the turbo is set up right, it will have no effect in rockcrawling. On the rocks, my engine almost never goes above 1500 RPM. But when I want it, or need it, I have the turbo to help out in certain spots. Getting through that super soft sand to get to the trail. I actually had that problem once. It really sucked ***.
Plus the inline 6 is noted for the best in torque delivery in any application, make, or model. I would actually love to get my hands on a 5.0 INLINE ford 6. they did make those in some 1/2 ton applications. Another great motor to have is the DOHC 24V 4.7 Toyota inline 6 found in late 80's early 90's land cruisers.
But there have been times, many times where my lack of HP put me in some bad situations. So a turbo is the answere
